Dividends This Week
This week presents a “kid in a candy store” opportunity for Aussie investors ready to get in on dividend paying stocks – there are six ASX listed Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) going ex-dividend.
To keep the tax-advantaged status granted them by the Australian government, REITS are bound by law to pay out at least 90% of their income subject to taxation in the form of dividend payments to shareholders.
Dividend hungry investors need not worry about elimination of dividend payments in hard times that frequently happen with non-trust stocks.
The ex-dividend date is the cut-off point for determining the number of shareholders eligible to receive the upcoming dividend. Anyone purchasing shares one day or more before the ex-dividend date qualify as recipients of the dividend. On the ex-dividend date the company and the market know how much the company will pay out in dividends.
The first trading day after the ex-dividend date the total amount of the dividends is reflected in the share price. The stock price typically falls in response but recovers in anywhere from a few f days to a few months.. That presents a window of opportunity to buy at a bargain price, as long as the investor has the patience to wait for the next dividend date. In Australia dividends are paid twice a year.
This week there are eight companies going ex-dividend.
