No investor considers a potential stock for investment in isolation. They need a comparison standard or benchmark to gauge the stock’s performance against similar stocks. Stock markets around the world maintain a variety of indexes, some to measure the country’s market as a whole, in segments, or by business sector.

ASX 200 Index (XJO)

Australia’s premier benchmark index is the S&P ASX 200 (XJO). The XJO is made up of 200 of Australia’s largest companies, with market capitalization ranging from $380 million dollars to more than $100 billion dollars, according to the ASX website. A committee from S&P (Standard and Poor’s) and the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) select the constituent companies. The XJO is rebalanced quarterly, removing some companies and adding others based on changes in market capitalization.

A list of constituent companies can be found on the ASX website. Here are the top ten as of May 2026, as BHP takes it’s place as the leading name, overtaking CBA:

  1. BHP Group (BHP)
  2. Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA)
  3. Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC)
  4. National Australia Bank (NAB)
  5. ANZ Group Holdings (ANZ)
  6. Macquarie Group Limited (MAQ)
  7. Wesfarmers Limited (WES)
  8. Rio Tinto (RIO)
  9. Fortescue Limited (FMG)
  10. Goodman Group (GMG)

Falling out of the list, having recently been as high as 3, is CSL Limited (CSL), with shares having pulled back significantly over the past year.

These are all multi-billion dollar companies, with a third of the indexes top ten companies coming from the financial sector – with all four of Australia’s big four banks. The materials sector is the second largest. This means the XJO provides investors with a performance benchmark for large cap stocks with market caps ranging from $380 million dollars to over $63billion in the top 10

ASX 200 (XJO) Forecast

The major analysts are expecting a respectable range for the ASX 200 in 2026, with the range pinning the year end between 8,900 to 9,500. The current setup is rather complicated by the geopolitical situation, and the RBA raising rates in each of the past three meetings as of May, and with the index down 0.65% YTD to this point, a positive end to the year that saw gains of 10% would be well received by bulls as it stands.
