ASX All Ordinaries (All Ords) Index (XAO)

The ASX ALL Ordinaries Index (XAO) is a benchmark index made up of the top 500 companies on the ASX – 85% of the entire universe of stocks trading on the ASX.

The ASX XAO is the oldest index on the Australian stock exchange, first constructed in 1980. Market capitalisation of $200 million dollars is required for entry into the XAO. Companies are selected for the index by a committee of Standard and Poor’s (S&P) and Australian Stock Exchange members. The index is rebalanced annually, in March.

Given the fact the XAO cuts deeper into the universe of stocks trading on the ASX, the All Ordinaries XAO could be considered as a better barometer of market performance in Australia than the narrower ASX 200 XJO. The bottom market capitalisation on the XJO is $380 million dollars while the bottom on the All Ordinaries XAO is $200 million dollars.

Investors considering stocks with market caps between $200 million dollars and $380 million dollars should see the All Ordinaries Index as a better benchmark standard against which to measure the performance of their targeted stock.

It seems reasonable to assume the 2025 forecasted growth for the All Ordinaries XAO will resemble the forecast for the ASX 200. Investment banking firm Morgan Stanley is bullish on the ASX 200, forecasting earnings growth of 10% for companies in the IASX 200 XJO.
