Meta Platforms stock (META) has proved a tricky customer so far this year, falling back 12.9% in the past two weeks to sit 8.76% lower on calendar 2026 leading into today’s earnings. The company has had more than it’s fair share of bumps in the road, with a low of $520.26 seta against a high of $738 this side of January. Earnings are coming after the US market close, with the social media and advertising giant facing intense scrutiny over its ballooning artificial intelligence infrastructure spending.
The results come at a delicate moment for megacap technology stocks. The so-called Magnificent Seven group erased roughly $797 billion in market value in a single session last week following disappointing guidance from Alphabet, which lifted its capital expenditure forecast despite strong revenue growth. Markets are now turning attention to whether Meta can deliver advertising growth while managing the margin pressure that comes with heavy AI investment.
Wall Street is looking for an EPS of $7.22, a modest increase from the $7.14 per share reported in the same quarter last year. Revenue is forecast to grow by a more healthy 26.88% Y/Y to $60.29 billion.

Key Focus Points
Advertising revenue remains Meta’s core business, and any signs of weakening demand or pricing pressure could weigh heavily on the stock. Analysts will be looking for commentary on ad load trends across Facebook and Instagram, as well as the performance of Reels and other newer monetisation formats.
Recent data points suggest some positive momentum. National Vision’s chief executive noted that Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have become one of the fastest-selling products at the eyeglass retailer, signalling strong consumer interest in the company’s hardware and wearables push.
Capital expenditure guidance will be the other critical factor. Meta is carrying roughly $420 billion in hidden off-balance-sheet debt, primarily from GPU contracts and data centre leases that have not yet been delivered or activated. That figure is nearly triple the company’s recorded debt.
While these liabilities only move onto the balance sheet once infrastructure becomes operational, the scale of Meta’s commitments underscores the financial intensity of its AI buildout. Any upward revision to CapEx plans could trigger the same negative reaction that hit Alphabet last week.
Margin trajectory will also be under the microscope. Investors want to see whether Meta can maintain profitability while absorbing the costs associated with AI model development, infrastructure expansion, and the Reality Labs division.
Stronger-than-expected advertising revenue growth, particularly if accompanied by stable or improving pricing trends, would likely be received positively. Evidence that Meta is successfully monetising Reels or other newer surfaces without cannibalising core ad revenue could also support the stock.
On the downside, any indication that capital spending will rise faster than previously signalled could prompt selling. The market’s reaction to Alphabet’s guidance increase demonstrated that investors are increasingly sceptical about the return profile of AI infrastructure investments, even when top-line growth remains solid.
The Setup
Meta’s stock has not been immune to the broader pressure facing megacap technology stocks. The Magnificent Seven group, which includes Meta alongside Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Nvidia, and Tesla, suffered its steepest one-day decline since the tariff-driven selloff in April 2025 last week, with Alphabet and Tesla leading the pullback, falling 6% and 14% respectively.
The earnings print will land at a time when questions about AI spending, margin pressure, and the sustainability of megacap valuations are front of mind for the market. Meta’s ability to articulate a clear path to profitability from its AI investments while maintaining advertising growth will likely determine whether the stock can buck the recent trend among its peers.
Options markets are pricing a move of ~7.5% following the print, setting up a volatile day ahead for META holders.
