The Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic MP, has announced the National Quantumย Advisory Committee that will help drive Australiaโ€™s National Quantum Strategy.

The 15-person committee, chaired by Australiaโ€™s Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley AO, will beย an integral part of the push to coordinate Australiaโ€™s quantum capability across research,ย industry and government. Minister Husic also said the strategy will be delivered by the endย of the year.

CSIRO conservatively estimates quantum technology in Australia could be a $4 billionย industry in computing, communications and sensing, creating 16,000 jobs by 2040.

Minister Husic said: โ€œAustralia is a recognised global leader in quantum technology andย research. We cannot afford to let that competitive advantage slip.

โ€œThe Albanese Government will deliver Australiaโ€™s first National Quantum Strategy, bringingย together our expertise in research, commercialisation and use of quantum technologies toย chart Australiaโ€™s future.

โ€œThe $1 billion critical technologies fund, part of the National Reconstruction Fund, will alsoย be available to support quantum industries.โ€

Minister Husic announced the formation of the National Quantum Advisory Committee inย Melbourne on Wednesday evening during the annual Pearcey Oration, which acknowledgesย the legacy of Dr Trevor Pearcey, who built Australiaโ€™s first digital computer in the 1940s.

โ€œWe need to ensure we embed quantum capability and value here in Australia. As Minister,ย it is not my job to say what canโ€™t be done, but to drive ambition for what we can achieveย together in quantum technology,โ€ he told the Pearcey Foundation.
