Amidst a year of impressive growth for ASX 200 bank stocks, Westpac shares (ASX: WBC) has emerged as a standout performer amongst the big 4. The S&P/ASX 200 Banks Index showcased impressive gains of more than 30% in 2024, and Westpac’s performance has been noteworthy in this upward trend.
Starting the year around $23 per share, Westpac’s share price has started 2025 above $32, with a 40% gain on the year supported by a dividend yield above 4.5%. The other big four names have also seen solid growth, albeit not at the level of Westpac. Taking a look at the below table, it is clear to see the bounce that each company has seen from their respective 52 week low, with CBA also the closest on the yearly chart with gains of more than 35%.
Outside of the big four, another name to jump on the year is Macquarie Group, with a gain of almost 20% on the year.
Macquarie Group’s business involves diverse operations such as investment banking, asset management, and commodities trading. The company has cemented its place as a leader in renewable energy and data-center investments, participating significantly in the $24 billion sale of AirTrunk to Blackstone. This investment focus aligns with global trends towards sustainable infrastructure, with Macquarie channeling substantial resources into renewable energy projects.
While analysts hold diverse opinions on Macquarie’s trajectory, its solid foundation across investment sectors and promising profit forecasts indicate a company that could defy market odds in the coming years.

Looking back for outperformance on the ASX200 Banks Index, both Westpac and CBA have certainly delivered through 2024, but whether there will be a continuation of this story through 2025 remains to be answered. We can expect plenty of shuffling as the year get’s going, and with the ASX 200 closing the first trading day of the year up 0.52%, and above the 8,200 level, bulls will be hoping for a strong year ahead.
