South32 shares (ASX: S32) climbed 3.1% today to A$5.01, reclaiming the psychologically important A$5 handle, to extend the YTD rally to 41.13%.
The move looks like follow-through buying after the company’s business update earlier this week, where management laid out what South32 will look like once the aluminium exit is complete. The pitch is a simpler portfolio, lower costs and a credible growth pipeline, and the market appears increasingly willing to pay for that shape rather than wait for the deal to close.
The strategic logic is compelling on paper. The Alcoa transaction values the divested assets at up to US$5.6 billion, including US$3.1 billion in cash, US$1 billion in Alcoa shares and further contingent consideration. Post-transaction, around 85% of pro-forma EBITDA is expected to come from copper, zinc, silver and lead, with projects already in construction or approved forecast to lift production volumes by roughly 55%.
Management is also targeting about US$125 million in annual overhead savings once new structures are fully implemented in FY29, and has flagged an initial shareholder return of around US$500 million via an in-specie distribution of half the Alcoa equity as a fully franked special dividend, with further returns to be considered after completion.
The growth side of the story has also firmed up. The Taylor zinc-lead-silver project at Hermosa now has an initial operating life of about 33 years, with first concentrate expected in the second half of FY28 and steady-state EBITDA guided at roughly US$650 million a year. At Sierra Gorda in Chile, a fourth grinding line is set to lift processing capacity by about 25%, with copper reserves increased and mine life extended to 2045. That detail helps answer the question of whether South32’s pivot is more than a portfolio clean-up. Alcoa’s recent move to raise dedicated debt financing for the acquisition has also eased counterparty concerns, encouraging the market to treat the transaction as more likely than not.

What Lay Ahead?
On the technical side, the picture is bullish, with the S32 share price above its 50-day moving average of $4.74, with the 50-day above the 200-day at $4.32. Trend-strength readings remain positive, though easing, which fits a maturing trend that needs fundamental delivery to keep momentum alive.
Whilst bulls are getting the better of things at present, bears point to timing and execution as risks. Completion of the Alcoa deal is targeted for the second half of FY27 and still requires shareholder and multiple regulatory approvals. The growth is back-end loaded, with Taylor’s first production in FY28, Sierra Gorda’s expansion around FY30-31 and full cost savings only by FY29. With the shares already up 90% over the past 12 months, the margin for error is narrow.
Bull Case:
- Alcoa deal unlocks up to US$5.6 billion and funds a leaner base-metals platform.
- Copper and zinc projects promise roughly 55% production growth over coming years.
- Special dividend and further capital returns signalled after transaction completes.
Bear Case:
- Deal completion not until H2 FY27, with shareholder and regulatory approvals pending.
- Growth is back-end loaded; Taylor and Sierra Gorda output still years away.
- Shares trade near consensus target, leaving little room for execution slips.
