More older people in the Illawarra will have a safe and secure place to call home thanks to a multimillion NSW Government partnership with Anglicare.

Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services Natasha Maclaren-Jones said repurposing and renovating the former Steelworks Hotel in Port Kembla will provide 30 social housing dwellings for seniors in the area.

“This $10 million development proves that the NSW Government is focused on boosting the supply of social and affordable homes across the state,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said.

“Older Australians are at higher risk of homelessness and this project will help provide local seniors with a roof over their head in safe, secure and accessible housing.”

“This is just one of the many projects under the Community Housing Assistance Agreement for the Illawarra, valued at approximately $55.3 million, which will create 135 new dwellings, including more than 102 new social and 33 affordable homes.”

The Department of Communities and Justice is contributing $5 million to the project through the $152.5 million Community Housing Innovation Fund (CHIF).

The complex is close to Wentworth Street retail shops, convenience stores and walking distance to local bus routes and Port kembla train station.

Anglicare CEO Simon Miller said the organisation is excited to be a part of the project.

“We’re committed to providing social and affordable housing across NSW and this project is one of several we have in the pipeline with this government,” Mr Miller said.

The CHIF is delivering more than 700 social and affordable housing dwellings in partnership with community housing providers across NSW.

In 2022-23, the NSW Government has provided $14 million in funding to specialist homelessness services providers in the Illawarra Shoalhaven area.
