Sandfire Resources shares (ASX: SFR) are up 5.82% at A$24.10 today, extending a sharp August rally that now stands at 27.1%. Today’s move comes off the back of FY results, with the Sandfire share price hitting a new all time high at A$25 intraday.

Markets are leaning into the record FY26 operating results, a much stronger balance sheet and renewed interest in copper-exposed miners. Sandfire’s June quarter lifted group copper-equivalent production to 47.6kt, up 38% from the prior quarter, and took FY26 output to 154.2kt, within guidance. Record quarterly sales revenue of about US$574 million and underlying EBITDA of roughly US$343 million highlighted the company’s operating leverage to copper prices, with margins near 60%.

Balance-sheet repair is another important part of the narrative. Sandfire ended June with approximately US$353 million of net cash and had fully repaid its corporate revolving facility. That gives management more flexibility around growth projects, potential acquisitions or capital returns, and the market may be anticipating some of that optionality before formal decisions are announced.

The Black Butte project in the United States adds a further layer of speculation. An updated study added maiden Lowry reserves and extended the proposed mine life, but the economics remain contentious. The study pointed to a post-tax internal rate of return around 13.3% on roughly US$474 million of pre-production capital, a level that may require disciplined partnering, permitting progress or a carefully timed development decision. Markets appear to be treating Black Butte as upside optionality rather than a fully de-risked base case.

FY27 guidance also supports the confidence. Sandfire has flagged 150kt to 166kt of copper-equivalent production, with only incremental unit-cost increases at MATSA and Motheo and a more even production profile through the year. In a materials sector that has been rewarding volume growth and cost control, that guidance helps explain why the stock has outperformed broader copper names in recent sessions.

Technical Setup

Technically, the setup is strong but stretched. The 14-day RSI is around 71, while CCI near 151 confirms an upside stretch. Price is above the 50-day average near A$19.77, and that average is above the 200-day average near A$18.37, a structure usually associated with an established uptrend. The 20-day exponential average around A$20.93 is also above the 50-day exponential average near A$19.97, underscoring the recent acceleration.

Momentum is still building rather than fully mature on some measures. The ADX is near 21 and rising, indicating strengthening trend force, while the shares are trading above the upper Bollinger Band around A$23.04. Band width has expanded to about 22%, pointing to higher volatility and a wider potential trading range.

The question now is whether the market’s copper optimism and expectations for Sandfire’s capital allocation can keep pace with the share price. Continued execution at MATSA and Motheo, a firm copper backdrop and a clear Black Butte decision could continue to support a rally, yet there is now plenty priced into the stock. New all time highs for bulls brings about a period of price discovery, which in itself can also be a high volatility period.

Bull Case:

  • Record FY26 revenue and strong margins support copper leverage.
  • Net cash near US$353 million boosts project and capital-return optionality.
  • FY27 guidance supports steady production with only modest cost pressure.

Bear Case:

  • Consensus target near A$19.96 sits well below current price.
  • Overbought RSI and upper-band move raise short-term cooling risk.
  • Black Butte returns, permitting and US cost inflation remain uncertain.
