Solutions to the nationalย shortage of skilled labourย and building back Australiaโ€™s industrial baseย will be high on theย agendaย forย theย Assistantย Manufacturingย Minister Tim Ayresย whoย willย chair a special Jobs and Skills Roundtable for Australian Heavy Industry today.

Ahead of the upcoming Jobs and Skills Summit, Assistant Minister Ayres said todayโ€™s roundtableย isย an important stepย for howย the Governmentย andย industryย canย develop plans that deliver good jobs and the right skills for the jobs of the future in Australian industry.

โ€œThe Government has clear plans, through the National Reconstruction Fund,ย to rebuild Australiaโ€™sย sovereign capabilitiesย by investing in areasย ofย national interestย such as rail, construction and defence,โ€ย Assistant Minister Ayres said.

โ€œWorkers and skills are at the heart of this,ย and todayโ€™s discussions bring together some of our countryโ€™s largest employers in theseย criticalย sectors.

โ€œI am looking forward toย discussingย challenges, opportunities and whatย strategies are needed toย train,ย and create good jobs for, women andย men in Australian manufacturing and to plan for the jobs of the future.

โ€œThe task before usย is massive but one that we have to tackle.ย A big part of driving productivity and economic gainsย is creating secure, well-paid jobs.

โ€œFor existing heavy industry- big users of gas and electricity- the issuesย of energy price and supply are front of mind today, but the focus of the Jobs and Skills Summit is on making sure Australians have the right skills for the jobs of the future, and thatย industry is creating good, secure and well-paid jobs and lifting national productivity.

โ€œOur industrial future depends on national cooperation, on energy efficiency and sustainability, on reducing energy costs and emissions, but critically on lifting productivity- getting the skills mix right and lifting wages.

โ€œTodayโ€™s discussions will be all about those last objectives, and I want to make sure that Australiaโ€™s heavy industry has a strong voiceย at the Jobs and Skills Summit next week.โ€

The Jobs and Skills Summit at Parliament House on 1 and 2 September will bring together unions, employers, civil society and governments, to address shared economic challenges, including skills shortages.
