Capstone Copper shares (ASX: CSC) managed to close out higher on Tuesday against a broadly red tape, rising 1.13% to $15.17. The shares were supported by copper’s grind toward record territory, with the bounce off A$14.95 now looking like a near term double bottom that will now be watched as a potentially key area of support in the coming sessions.
The move appears to reflect renewed positioning in copper stocks, while the metal trades near historic highs, and the fundamental backdrop has given buyers plenty to work with.
Capstone completed its acquisition of the San Pietro copper-gold-iron-cobalt concessions in Chile’s Atacama region at the start of the month, consolidating a district-scale position between its Mantoverde and Santo Domingo assets. The ground arrives with an inferred resource of roughly 492 million tonnes grading 0.23% copper, adding immediate scale to the company’s mineral inventory and a pipeline of higher-grade delineation targets.
That deal landed on top of a record June quarter. Revenue climbed about 36% year on year to US$739.7 million, adjusted EBITDA reached US$354 million for a seventh consecutive quarterly record, and net debt fell to around US$675 million, leaving liquidity near US$1.08 billion. Management has also been promoting a modernization program at the Pinto Valley operation in Arizona, reinforcing the picture of a company investing through the cycle with a balance sheet increasingly able to fund it.
The commodity itself is doing much of the heavy lifting. Copper prices on the LME have been trading near prior records, with prices around US$14,200 to US$14,550 a tonne supported by tariff dynamics and supply constraints. For a producer with Capstone’s earnings leverage, that environment feeds directly into cash flow expectations.

View From The Street
Analysts see further room to run, with the average price target on CSC at $17.82 implying upside of ~17% from here. That view rests on the record earnings base, the de-leveraging progress and the growth optionality across Mantoverde, a potential Santo Domingo final investment decision and now San Pietro. It is not without tension. June-quarter earnings per share came in slightly below consensus forecasts, and C1 cash costs of US$2.82 a pound moved above the top end of full-year guidance, keeping the valuation debate alive even among supporters of the stock.
On the chart, the backdrop is constructive, as Capstone Copper shares sit above its 50-day moving average at $14.35, the 200-day at $13.90, whilst the 20-day EMA at $15.42 remains above the 50-day at $14.75. That alignment points to an established uptrend providing underlying support.
This is a year that has brought plenty of chop for holders, and after a 58% bounce off the March low close, the CSC share price is once again trading positive YTD, up 1 cent on the period. Whether the delta to the broader market today can continue will be told in time, but for now at least, a green 2026 is something to smile about after what was a very tough start to the year.
Bull Case:
- Copper near record highs supports strong earnings and cash flow momentum.
- San Pietro adds district-scale resource growth and exploration upside.
- Consensus target of $17.82 implies roughly 17% further upside.
Bear Case:
- Cash costs above guidance and production down 10% last quarter.
- High beta of 2.79 magnifies any copper or sentiment reversal.
- Integration and project execution risks could disappoint priced-in growth.
