BHP Group Ltd (ASX: BHP) shares have surged to a new almost two year high today, driven by rising copper prices and bullish momentum building in gold and mining names to close the week.
The mining giant’s shares hit A$45.98 on the ASX, before closing at A$45.59, a 1.09% increase on the day and a new 52wk high for the stock. Over the past month, BHP has gained 5.88%, retesting levels last seen in early 2024, as the broader mining sector benefits from strong commodity prices. The break above the A$45 resistance level, and the hold into the weekend suggests a continuation of the upward trend may well be in play.
A key driver of BHP’s recent performance is the surge in copper prices, which have reached a record high of US$11,600 per tonne on the London Metal Exchange. Copper’s critical role in the energy transition, particularly in electric vehicles and AI data centers, has fueled demand, benefiting BHP as the world’s largest copper producer.
In addition to strong commodity prices, BHP has entered into a binding agreement with Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) for a US$2 billion infrastructure project related to its Western Australia Iron Ore operations. The project, structured as a new trust with BHP holding a 51% stake and GIP the remaining 49%, is expected to be completed by the end of FY26, subject to customary approvals. This strategic move is anticipated to enhance the efficiency and capacity of BHP’s iron ore operations.

JP Morgan and Citi maintain neutral ratings with price targets ranging from A$42 to A$46.27. Conversely, Ord Minnett and Morgan Stanley have issued more optimistic buy ratings, suggesting further upside potential for the shares.
