CANBERRA, AAP – Senior health officials from the medicines regulator will be grilled on Australia’s pandemic response as part of the Senate Estimates hearings.

On Wednesday the community affairs committee will focus on Australia’s health policy, access and response.

Officers from the Therapeutic Goods Administration will answer questions on health protection, emergency response and regulation as well as immunisation.

During his appearance on the ABC’s 7.30 Report on Tuesday night the prime minister promoted the federal government’s pandemic response.

“Over the last three-and-a-half years since I took on this job, I said I wanted to keep our economy strong, keep Australians safe and keep Australians together,” he said.

He said at the time the government was elected, no one could have foreseen the pandemic.

“We’ve saved 40,000 lives, the Australian economy has come through this pandemic stronger (and) we have the second-rated highest pandemic preparedness in the world,” he said.
