South32 (ASX: S32), listed on the Australian Securities Exchange as ASX: S32, has achieved a significant milestone for its Worsley Mine Development Project by obtaining federal environmental approval. This approval, crucial for the project’s progression, was granted under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. This development follows a prior state approval received on December 20, 2024, with the federal nod finalised on February 12, 2025.
The federal approval paves the way for South32 to access additional bauxite reserves, ensuring sustained production capabilities at Worsley Alumina through at least the fiscal year 2036. The commencement of mining activities in the newly approved areas is anticipated to begin in the fourth quarter of FY25. However, the continuation of the project remains contingent upon securing further secondary approvals.
South32 CEO Graham Kerr expressed optimism about the approval, highlighting its positive implications for the company’s operations, its employees, and the local communities in the Peel and South West regions. Worsley Alumina stands as a significant economic contributor, being one of the largest employers in the region. The operation, which has a legacy spanning over 40 years, supports thousands of workers and contractors.
Furthermore, Worsley Alumina has been recognised for its adherence to global standards in alumina production, having received multiple certifications from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative. This acknowledgment underscores South32’s commitment to responsible mining practices and its contribution to the global energy transition.
South32 has consistently emphasised maintaining robust relationships with local communities, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable operations and environmental stewardship.
