Stocks of interest at the close of trade on the ASX on Friday, December 21:

IAG – INSURANCE AUSTRALIA – down 30 cents, or 4.3 per cent, to $6.65

SUN – SUNCORP GROUP – down 50 cents, or 3.9 per cent, to $12.42

QBE – QBE INSURANCE – up one cent, or 0.1 per cent, to $$9.76

Giant balls of ice pelted Sydney’s motorists and rooftops, and now insurers are taking cover as a barrage of claims rain down, with IAG expecting the bill from the storm to hit $169 million.

HSO – HEALTHSCOPE LIMITED – up 12 cents, or 5.8 per cent, $2.18

Healthscope says Canadian investment firm Brookfield Asset Management intends to proceed with its $4.5 billion takeover offer, sending the hospital operator’s shares sharply higher.

NCM – NEWCREST MINING – up 37 cents, or 1.8 per cent, to $21.26

NST – NORTHERN STAR – up 32 cents, or 3.7 per cent, to $8.91

SAR – SARACEN – up five cents, or 1.8 per cent, to $2.79

The gold miners glistened after a near $U19 per ounce rise in the yellow metal.
