The Nasdaq Composite experienced a boost in early trading Friday, fueled by a positive U.S. consumer sentiment report indicating a recovery in confidence and a cooling of inflation expectations. The preliminary December reading injected optimism into the markets, providing a tailwind for growth stocks.

Nasdaq Rebounds on Positive Consumer Sentiment

In early trading, the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.7%, reflecting the positive market reaction to the consumer sentiment data. This upward movement underscores the sensitivity of tech-heavy indices to macroeconomic indicators, particularly those related to consumer behavior and inflation.

The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index rebounded by 2.3 points to 53.3 in the preliminary December print, surpassing forecasts. This recovery largely offsets the previous month’s decline to 51.0, a low not seen since June 2022. The expectations component of the index showed the most significant improvement, climbing to 55.0 from 51.0 in November. Conversely, the current conditions gauge dipped slightly to 50.7.
