Wall Street indexes, experienced slight declines on Wednesday as disappointing earnings reports from key players like Netflix and Texas Instruments, coupled with ongoing U.S. government shutdown concerns, dampened market sentiment. The Nasdaq Composite bore the brunt of the selling pressure.

Netflix and Texas Instrument’s Earnings Disappoint

Netflix (NFLX) shares plummeted 8.9% following the release of its third-quarter earnings, trading down to levels around $1,150. The streaming giant missed Wall Street’s EPS targets due to a substantial $619 million charge related to a Brazilian tax dispute. Texas Instruments (TXN) also felt the sting, with its stock sinking 4.9% after a downbeat fourth-quarter profit and revenue outlook stoked worries about a prolonged recovery in the analog chip market. These declines rippled through the broader market, impacting major indexes.

Netflix reported revenues of approximately $11.5 billion, a 17% year-over-year increase, and a net income of roughly $2.5 billion, translating to EPS of $5.87. While the revenue figure showed growth, the EPS fell short of the expected $6.97. However, the company expressed optimism for the fourth quarter, projecting revenues of about $11.96 billion and an EPS of $5.45, slightly above consensus estimates. As reported by nasdaq.com, Texas Instruments’ Q3 results included a $118 million cash benefit from the CHIPS Act.

Despite the day’s volatility, some stocks bucked the trend. Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) surged more than 16% after its Q3 results handily beat expectations. Microsoft (MSFT), Nvidia (NVDA), and Alphabet (GOOG) also provided a counterweight to the overall market weakness.

The consumer discretionary sector was the biggest loser among the S&P 500’s 11 major sectors, declining by 0.7%, with Tesla (TSLA) also edging slightly lower ahead of its quarterly results. Energy, on the other hand, emerged as the top-performing sector, rising 0.9% as oil prices climbed. Spot gold prices extended their declines to a near two-week low, following a sharp drop in the previous session.
