JB Hunt Transport Services reports second-quarter results after the US market close (15 July), with Wall Street expecting an earnings per share of $1.73 and revenue of $3.26 billion.

The expected earnings figure represents a 30.5% increase compared with the same quarter last year, when the company posted $1.31 per share. Revenue growth expectations are more modest at 11.21%.

JBHT shares have been outperforming over the past year, up 86% in the past 12 months, and 43.8% since the turn of 2026, raising expectations.

What to watch

Expectations are building into the print, with analyst consensus on EPS shifting upwards from $1.71 to $1.73 in the week leading in. The next quarter is expected to show further expansion, with EPS currently pegged at $2.07 for the period, and growth from $7.47 per share this year, to $9.56 in EPS for FY27.

Key operating metrics to watch include intermodal volumes, pricing per load, and operating margins across JB Hunt’s main business segments.

The company’s ability to pass on costs and maintain pricing discipline will be important, particularly in its intermodal and dedicated contract services divisions.

Management commentary on freight volumes through the second half of 2026 will matter as much as the quarterly numbers themselves. Markets will also be listening for updates on fuel cost management and the impact of operational efficiency initiatives, including the deployment of AI-driven logistics technology.

Sector Tailwinds

The trucking and logistics sector has shown signs of recovery after a prolonged freight recession that pressured volumes and pricing through much of 2025.

On 9 July, Citigroup upgraded the trucking sector, citing improving conditions as capacity tightens and freight rates stabilise.

Broader market sentiment toward logistics stocks has also improved on the back of stronger-than-expected labour market data, with weekly US initial unemployment claims falling to a six-week low of 215,000 early this month.

Increased investment in AI infrastructure has also supported logistics companies by driving efficiency gains and reducing operating costs across supply chain networks.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including escalating US-Iran hostilities and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, have introduced some uncertainty around fuel costs and global shipping flows, though the direct impact on North American trucking remains limited.
