Westgold Resources’ shares (ASX:WGX) led the ASX 200 on Thursday, closing up 5.07% at A$2.90 following the release of its FY26 production guidance. The gold miner’s outlook projects a significant increase in output, helping return WGX to positive territory on 2025, up 0.35%.
The stock’s surge reflects positive sentiment surrounding Westgold’s forecast to produce between 345,000 and 385,000 ounces of gold in FY26. This represents a 5.7% to 18% increase compared to the 326,384 ounces produced in FY25.
Westgold anticipates achieving this production growth with an all-in sustaining cost (AISC) of AUD 2,600 to AUD 2,900 per ounce. This compares to an AISC of AUD 2,666 per ounce in FY25, suggesting improved operational efficiency.
The company is investing heavily to achieve these targets. Westgold has allocated A$270 million for non-sustaining capital expenditures, primarily focused on development at the Bluebird-South Junction and Great Fingall mines. An additional A$50 million is earmarked for exploration and resource definition, with plans for 100 kilometers of drilling.
Wayne Bramwell, Westgold’s Managing Director and CEO, emphasized the company’s focus on maximizing free cash flow through optimized operations at its largest mines and mills. “Consistency in delivery, driven by continued investment in drilling, improving operational efficiency, and prudent capital allocation,” remains a key priority, according to Bramwell.

The Bluebird-South Junction mine is expected to reach a steady-state run rate of 1 to 1.2 million tonnes per annum by the end of FY26. The Great Fingall mine anticipates first ore from higher-grade virgin stopes in the second quarter of FY26, with commercial production expected in FY27.
Analysts point to Westgold’s disciplined approach to cost control, including the sale of the Lakewood Mill for A$70 million, as strengthening its balance sheet and providing flexibility for growth initiatives. This transformation from a loss-making entity to a cash-generative producer has positioned it favorably in the current gold market.
Key Highlights:
- FY26 production guidance of 345k-385k ounces represents a 5.7%-18% increase over FY25
- AISC target of A$2,600-A$2,900 per ounce compared to A$2,666 in FY25
- A$270 million planned investment in non-sustaining capital expenditures

The next key event for Westgold is the release of its preliminary annual report on August 28, 2025. Analysts estimate next half-year earnings per share at 0.10 AUD, a significant recovery from the last half-year earnings per share of −2.92 AUD.
Analyst price targets for Westgold range from AUD 2.90 to AUD 5.35, suggesting considerable upside potential.

While the market is celebrating Westgold’s production guidance, a closer look reveals potential challenges. The projected increase in AISC, even with higher production, raises concerns about underlying cost pressures.
The company’s reliance on the successful and timely ramp-up of the Bluebird-South Junction and Great Fingall mines introduces execution risk. Any delays or operational hiccups could significantly impact the company’s ability to meet its ambitious targets. Moreover, the substantial capital expenditure required to fuel this growth could strain the company’s balance sheet if projects do not deliver as expected.
Westgold’s recent share price appreciation is closely tied to its optimistic FY26 guidance, strategic investments in key mining projects, and a strong commitment to operational efficiency and shareholder returns. The market will be keenly awaiting the preliminary annual report to assess the company’s progress toward achieving its ambitious goals.
