Waratah Minerals shares (ASX: WTM) jumped more than 31% on Tuesday, after the company released what management described as the best drilling results in the company’s history, confirming high-grade gold continuity at its Spur Gold Discovery in New South Wales and raising the prospect of a significantly larger mineralised system than previously understood.
The WTM share price heads into Wednesday’s open at A$0.80, having added 31.4% on heavy volume of 7.54million shares, 13.5 times the ADV.
Drilling results drive WTM shares higher
The reason for the huge daily gain was the release of assay results from drill hole SPD075 at the Spur Project, located on Exploration Licence EL5238 in NSW’s Eastern Lachlan Fold Belt, approximately five kilometres west of Newmont’s tier-one Cadia Valley gold-copper operation. The headline intercept from SPD075 was 46 metres at 7.27 grams per tonne gold (g/t Au) from 541 metres depth, a broad, high-grade result by any measure in this geological setting.
Within that headline interval, the high-grade sub-zones were particularly striking. The drill hole returned 19 metres at 15.62 g/t Au from 541 metres, including 10 metres at 28.93 g/t Au from 550 metres. A single peak assay of 1.3 metres at 206 g/t Au from 556 metres underlines the presence of an ultra-high-grade core within the broader mineralised envelope. While such narrow peak assays must be interpreted with caution at this stage of exploration, they point to the kind of bonanza-grade shoots that can anchor a significant gold system.
The hole also intersected meaningful mineralisation higher up in the column, including 23 metres at 2.18 g/t Au from 312 metres depth, 80 metres at 0.97 g/t Au from 394 metres, and 36.6 metres at 0.71 g/t Au from 490 metres. Taken together, the drill hole encountered gold across multiple discrete intervals spanning several hundred metres of vertical extent within a single hole, a structural characteristic that suggests a stacked, multi-domain mineralised system rather than a single narrow vein.

Critically, SPD075 extended known mineralisation 70 metres north and 150 metres east of previous drilling in the Consols Zone. The results helped define four discrete higher-grade domains, each grading above 2 g/t Au, within the footwall of the structural Colthi Fault. The Consols Zone now has a defined footprint of roughly 400 metres of strike length and 400 metres of vertical extent, a scale that begins to attract genuine resource-scale attention if grades hold through infill drilling.
What next?
From a technical standpoint, the drill results suggest the company is moving from an early-stage discovery phase toward a more systematic resource definition phase. The identification of four distinct high-grade domains within the Consols Zone footwall provides a clear geological framework for future infill and step-out drilling programs. True widths are estimated at greater than 80% of the reported downhole widths, which is a favourable geometry for a deposit of this type.
However, it’s worth remembering that Waratah remains a pre-resource exploration company, and the intercepts reported to date represent downhole widths that must be converted into JORC-compliant resource estimates through further systematic drilling. That process takes time and capital. As a junior explorer with revenues under US$1 million, the company funds its operations through equity markets, and the intensity of the current drilling campaign will eventually require fresh capital. Shareholder dilution, while a standard feature of the junior exploration lifecycle, remains a real consideration for those assessing the stock at elevated price levels.
Whether the WTM share price can hold and build on the gains will depend heavily on the quality of assay results still pending, the company’s ability to fund an expanded drilling program without excessive dilution, and ultimately whether the four high-grade domains identified to date can be stitched together into a resource estimate that justifies the project’s growing ambitions.
Bull Case:
- Headline intercept of 46m at 7.27 g/t Au is exceptional by Lachlan Fold Belt standards.
- Ultra-high-grade core of 206 g/t Au signals potential for a bonanza-style ore shoot.
- Four defined high-grade domains provide a clear framework for systematic resource growth.
- Proximity to Newmont’s Cadia Valley enhances joint-venture and acquisition appeal significantly.
- Active drill rigs and pending assays sustain near-term positive news flow momentum.
Bear Case:
- Pre-resource stage means no JORC estimate yet; intercepts require extensive infill drilling.
- Junior explorer with sub-US$1m revenue; future drilling relies entirely on equity raises.
- Sharp 31% single-day gain increases risk of profit-taking on any disappointing assay result.
- Downhole widths, not true widths, require further confirmation before resource conversion.
- Small-cap volatility means price gains can reverse rapidly on operational or market setbacks.
