Nufarm shares (ASX: NUF) pulled back sharply yesterday, giving back some recent gains despite flagging robust full-year earnings growth and accelerating balance sheet repair, as markets locked in profits and technical selling pressure took hold.

The Nufarm share price closed 6.25% lower at A$3.00 on Wednesday, snapping a strong run that had carried the company up 29.31% since the start of 2026. The decline was also technically notable, with the stock slipping beneath its 50-day SMA at A$3.06 on the day of the guidance update, a level that had previously offered support.

The price action around A$3.30 is now drawing attention from technical traders, with the stock rejected twice in recent weeks, raising the prospect of a double-top formation. In classical technical analysis, a double top is a bearish reversal pattern that signals a potential shift from an uptrend to a period of consolidation or decline. Whether that pattern confirms depends on whether A$3.00 holds as support in the sessions ahead.

What is driving the Nufarm share price?

Ahead of its full-year FY26 result, Nufarm issued a trading update that painted a broadly constructive picture of the business. The company guided for full-year underlying EBITDA of between A$370 million and A$380 million, representing approximately 25% growth on FY25 at the midpoint of the range. That figure sits above what many in the market had anticipated heading into the announcement, reflecting improved execution across several divisions and the early benefits of a multi-year cost reduction program.

Balance sheet progress was equally striking. Net debt leverage is expected to fall to approximately 2.0 times, down materially from 2.7 times a year earlier and from 3.6 times recorded at the half-year mark in 1H26. Nufarm attributed the improvement to positive free cash flow generation and disciplined working capital management, two metrics that had been a source of concern for markets in prior periods when the company carried a heavier debt load.

However, the update also disclosed between A$90 million and A$110 million in material one-off items for the year. These restructuring-related charges will weigh heavily on statutory net profit after tax, and while they are largely non-recurring in nature, their size was sufficient to temper enthusiasm about the headline EBITDA numbers. Markets appeared to focus on the gap between underlying and statutory earnings as a near-term negative.

On the strategic front, Nufarm confirmed it remains on track to deliver A$50 million in annualised run-rate cost savings by the end of FY27. The program includes the closure of its Alsip manufacturing facility in Illinois, the previously flagged closure of its Kwinana plant in Western Australia, and an accelerated rationalisation of its product portfolio through SKU reduction. Together, these moves are designed to right-size the company’s manufacturing footprint, reduce overhead, and sharpen focus on higher-margin product lines.

What lay ahead

From a fundamental perspective, the trajectory is clearly improving. A leverage ratio approaching 2.0 times gives the company meaningfully more financial flexibility than it has had in recent years, and the path toward A$50 million in structural cost savings provides a credible earnings tailwind into FY27 and beyond.

The near-term risk, however, is that the double-top technical pattern at A$3.30 acts as an overhang on the share price until the market can digest the full-year statutory result and assess the true cash cost of the restructuring program. A confirmed break below A$3.00 on volume would likely extend the pullback toward the next area of technical interest, while a recovery and close back above the 50-day SMA at A$3.06 would suggest the sell-off was an overreaction to the one-off charges.

Bull Case:

  • Underlying EBITDA guidance of A$370-380m represents ~25% year-on-year growth
  • Leverage falling to 2.0x signals rapid balance sheet repair and growing financial flexibility
  • A$50m run-rate cost savings by FY27 provides a credible structural earnings tailwind
  • Seed Technologies and Omega-3 platforms diversify revenue beyond cyclical crop protection

Bear Case:

  • A$90-110m in one-off charges will materially drag statutory NPAT in FY26
  • Double-top formation at A$3.30 and break below 50-day SMA signal near-term technical weakness
  • North American crop protection softness and fish oil oversupply cap near-term margin recovery
