NextDC shares (ASX:NXT) fell 2.12% to A$10.60 on Thursday, hitting fresh 52-week lows at A$10.37 in the process, and extending a slide that has seen the stock fall 28.76% over the past six weeks. The reversal into negative territory YTD (-14.1%) comes against a backdrop of record contracts, and strong forward guidance.
It has been something of a year of two halves for NXT shares, with the first five months of the year to June 3rd seeing the stock add 32.66%. Since that point, it has been a fourth month pullback that has stretched to 35.25%.
The selling appears to reflect a repricing of what it will cost the company to deliver its growth, rather than doubts about demand itself. Contracted utilisation has tripled to about 740MW, with a forward order book of roughly 565MW, more than three times current billing utilisation.
Yet the market’s focus has shifted to the capital intensity of that pipeline. FY26 capex hit a record of about A$3.4 billion, and management has guided to A$5.25 billion to A$5.75 billion in FY27, signalling elevated spending to convert the order book into revenue. With free cash flow running at roughly negative A$1.7 billion and debt around A$3.37 billion, the equity story has become highly sensitive to funding costs and execution timelines.
The macro backdrop is compounding the pressure after the RBA lifted the cash rate to 4.60% this week, for its fourth hike this year. That is a difficult environment for a company that pays no dividend, trades on forward growth and requires years of heavy spending before its contracted capacity generates cash.

The fundamentals remain strong on paper, as FY26 delivered revenue growth of 16%, underlying EBITDA of A$248.8 million, up 15%, and a statutory net profit of A$82.1 million, swinging from a A$60.5 million loss a year earlier. FY27 guidance points to net revenue of A$615 million to A$640 million and underlying EBITDA of A$385 million to A$410 million.
What Lay Ahead
Looking to the analyst community for clues, and it is a bullish outlook for NextDC, with the average price target of A$20.18 implying a 90% potential upside from here. UBS are one of the bulls, carrying a buy rating with a A$23.45 target, framing recent weakness as an opportunity if the company executes on its order book.
On the technical side, the picture points bearish, with NXT trading well below its 50-day moving average of A$12.92, which itself sits below the 200-day average of A$13.49, having made a death cross in mid September. That alignment points to an established, accelerating downtrend, whilst the ADX reading near 32 and rising suggests the trend has genuine strength behind it. Rounding out the technical look, the stock holds an RSI right on the threshold of oversold at 30.08, confirming what you see on the charts, a negative trend that has been running how.
There are reasons for both bulls and bears to remain interested here, with the company the leading AI name on the ASX. For now, bears have the upper hand in the final stretch of a year of two halves.
