Liontown Resources (ASX: LTR) saw its share price decline by 8% today, following a significant capital raise and what appears to be some profit-taking after Monday’s rally.
Liontown successfully raised A$316 million through an equity offering, issuing new shares at A$0.73 each. This discounted price, aimed at fortifying the balance sheet, appears to have contributed to the downward pressure.
The capital raise was intended to support ongoing development of the Kathleen Valley project and address operational funding needs. Securing the funding is viewed as crucial for Liontown to execute its expansion plans amidst a volatile lithium market.
However, the influx of new shares diluted existing holdings, a common consequence of equity raises. This dilution, coupled with the discounted offer price, is likely a key driver of the day’s price action.
The broader lithium market has experienced significant headwinds in recent periods, with lithium carbonate prices declining considerably over the past year. This downturn has impacted the valuations of lithium miners globally, including Liontown. Yet news of a closure of a major Chinese mine boosted sentiment yesterday, and saw huge demand come in for lithium names. The rally that ensued, pushing LTR above A$1 could have been taken as a solid opportunity for some to take some risk off the table.
