IAG shares (ASX:IAG) fell back 5.1% on Thursday to head into the final session of the week at A$7.81, making it one of the sharper weekly declines the stock has seen in recent times. Sitting 9.5% lower since the start of this week, the move is not a quiet shift lower but one which has also seen the A$8 support level give way.

Whilst there was hesitation leading into the latest earnings, markets were proven to be correct in their concern, as IAG reported underlying NPAT of $1.022 billion for FY26, a 24.8% drop Y/Y. Gross Written Premium rose to $18,412 million from $17,106 million, whilst Underlying Insurance Profit also increased to $1,578 million from $1,542 million. Guidance for FY27 points to between 5-8% of Gross Written Premium growth, with reported insurance margin between 14.5-16.5%.

A final dividend of 20 cents (80% franking) and FY dividend of 32 cents (1 cent higher than the previous year), were not sufficient to stem the selling pressure on the day, as IAG’s share price moved negative YTD (-2.25%).

Price Targets

Despite the weakness, the analyst consensus still carries a price target of A$8.49, roughly 10% above where the stock is trading. On the technical side, IAG is now trading below the lower Bollinger Band, which sits at A$8.14, with the band midpoint at A$8.47 and the upper band at A$8.79. A move of this kind, breaking below the lower band on meaningful volume, is exactly what you would expect to see following an earnings induced pullback.

It suggests the stock has moved outside its recent range and that the immediate pressure is to the downside.

Bull Case:

  • Consensus target of A$8.49 implies nearly 10% upside from current levels.
  • Active buyback program provides ongoing capital return support.
  • Premium pricing discipline could restore margins if claims costs ease.

Bear Case:

  • RACQ legal action raises remediation cost and reputational risk.
  • Claims inflation may continue to erode premium growth benefits.
  • Guidance trim signals management caution about near-term earnings quality.
