- SYDNEY, AAP – Wine and beer will continue to flow at the luxury Crown Sydney tower but gambling is still a no-go, the gaming regulator has ruled. The NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority on Tuesday renewed three interim liquor licences for the resort at Barangaroo. It means alcohol can be sold at restaurants and bars until the end of October. But the regulator says its position on the company’s gaming operations has not changed.
The authority sensationally withheld approval for gaming at the Sydney facility last November, just a month before its opening, as an inquiry aired damning claims about the company’s operation.
In her February report, Commissioner Patricia Bergin found Crown facilitated money laundering through subsidiaries’ bank accounts then failed to act when it was drawn to their attention in public media reporting.
The authority was still considering Crown’s responses to Ms Bergin’s findings, it said on Tuesday.
“These issues are detailed and complex, and Crown is required to undertake significant change to satisfy the authority that it is on a pathway to regain suitability to hold a gaming licence,” chairman Philip Crawford said.
“It will take time for Crown to fully implement that change and for the authority to give it proper consideration before determining the most appropriate course of action.”
