Cochlear Ltd shares (ASX: COH) are down 2.61% today, following a 7.58% gain in yesterday’s session, off the back of earnings. With bulls looking to build on what is now a mighty 53% recovery from April’s lows, there is some pause for thought following the recent financials.

The company guided to a profit rebound for FY27, whilst also putting up numbers for FY26 that came in at the top end of guidance. As impressive as the rebound has been, Cochlear’s share price continues to sit 47.2% lower since the start of calendar 2026.

The rally appears to reflect a market that has decided, at least for now, that the worst of Cochlear’s troubles are behind it. Profit of $322 million, whilst 22% lower Y/Y, was right at the top end of guidance, with single digit growth for FY27 expected. That would mean net profit of $330M-$350M, which accompanied by a 70% dividend payout provides something for bulls to get behind.

The operational backdrop, however, remains genuinely difficult. Softer implant volumes in developed markets, hospital capacity constraints across Western Europe, weaker referral pipelines, disruptions tied to Middle East conflict, and Australian dollar strength have all been flagged as drags on FY26 profit and margins.

A broader rotation back into quality Australian healthcare names has also provided a supportive backdrop. Cochlear has acted as a leverage play on renewed investor appetite for structural growth stories with defensive characteristics, and that sector bid appears to remain intact.

The technical picture reinforces the sense of a market in trend-acceleration mode. Cochlear’s share price has broken above the upper Bollinger Band, which sits at A$136.58, whilst a band width of 22% indicates the stock has already been moving through an expanding period of volatility.

Giving back some gains following an earnings jump is not entirely unexpected after such a run, with markets working through the implications of the print. Having bounced 52% up off the lows, whilst 54% lower on a TTM, suggests Cochlear shares are in the midst of a reassessment. Yet with the underlying price only ~$49 from the 52 week low, and ~$167 away from the highs, there remains plenty of work to be done if longer term holders are to be made whole.
