AMP Ltd has delivered its strongest half-year result in years, propelling it’s share price (ASX:AMP) to levels not seen since 2018 as the wealth manager’s multi-year turnaround shows tangible signs of taking hold.
AMP shares jumped 5.96% to close at A$2.31, leading the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index on the day, after touching an intraday high of A$2.36. The share price has now more than doubled from its 52-week low of A$1.14 reached just five months ago, marking one of the most dramatic recoveries among major financial services firms on the Australian exchange.
Financials Driving The Move in AMP Shares
The company’s half-year 2026 results revealed assets under management grew 8.2% year-on-year to $167.6 billion, driven by what management described as sustained momentum across its wealth and retirement businesses. More significantly, AMP’s Platforms division recorded net cash flows of $3.1 billion, representing a 33% increase from the first half of 2025. The company attributed this acceleration to both new adviser activations and expanding relationships with existing advisers on its platform.
Perhaps the most symbolically important milestone came from the Superannuation and Investments division, which delivered its first positive half-year net cash flow result since 2017. The division recorded $76 million in net inflows for the half, a stark reversal from the $75 million in outflows during the same period last year. This $151 million swing reflects what AMP characterised as growth in inflows combined with improving member retention, addressing one of the most persistent concerns that had dogged the business for nearly a decade.
On the bottom line, underlying net profit after tax climbed 33% year-on-year to $174 million, demonstrating operating leverage as the company converts scale improvements into earnings growth. The profit increase significantly outpaced the AUM growth rate, suggesting margin expansion across the business.

Capital Management Initiatives
The board declared an interim dividend of 3 cents per share, 20% franked, representing a 50% increase from the prior year’s interim payout. While the absolute level remains modest compared to the company’s pre-Royal Commission distributions, the direction of travel signals growing confidence in earnings sustainability.
AMP also announced its intention to commence an additional $150 million on-market share buyback program. This follows a pattern of capital returns established over recent years as the company’s balance sheet has stabilised following the divestment of AMP Life and other non-core assets. The buyback is designed to be earnings-per-share accretive and provides technical support for the share price by reducing the number of shares on issue.
What Next For AMP?
The doubling of the share price in five months has given bulls plenty to cheer, yet leaves less margin of safety for investors entering at current levels. While the fundamental improvements are clear, markets have moved quickly to price in a successful turnaround, raising the bar for future results. Any disappointment in second-half flows, margin progression, or broader market conditions could trigger profit-taking after such a strong run.
The critical test for AMP will be demonstrating that the first-half performance represents a structural shift rather than a cyclical tailwind. Key metrics to watch include whether platform and superannuation flows remain positive through the second half of 2026, any updates to cost guidance that might affect margin outlook, and the pace at which the company executes its $150 million buyback program.
Bull Case:
- First positive super flows since 2017 signals genuine franchise stabilisation
- Platform flows up 33% demonstrates adviser confidence and organic growth momentum

- Competitive threats from industry super funds and bank platforms remain intense
- Legacy reputation issues may limit flow acceleration without aggressive price competition
- Dividend still modest and only 20% franked signals rebuild incomplete
