The Australian share market has closed higher despite fading a little in afternoon trading, with stocks boosted by strong monthly US jobs data and better-than-expected Australian retail spending figures for April.

At 1615 AEST, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 was up 35.1 points, or 0.59 per cent, at 6,025.5 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 34.6 points, or 0.57 per cent, at 6,138.6 points.

The SPI200 futures contract was up 33 points, or 0.55 per cent, at 6,028 points.
