Victoria’s largest power station is sending a generator as big as an aeroplane to Germany for a repair job.

The spare generator from AGL’s Loy Yang A power station weighs around 255 tonnes and is longer than an Airbus A380.

Four prime movers will drive the machine from Gippsland to Port Melbourne on Thursday before it’s put on a cargo ship.

AGL said the absence of the generator, replaced during a planned outage in October, would not affect operations.

It is expected to be returned to the power station later in the year.

VicRoads worked to minimise delays from Thursday’s move.
