We’re pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Stockies Award – the best online brokers in Australia, as determined by you. The annual Stockies Award is now in its 7th year, and the stakes are even higher.

Our winners this year received thousands of votes from traders and investors around the country who backed their favourite broker by voting for them. TheBull Stockies Awards are set firmly in the tradition that traders and investors are the best judges of the top online firms to deal with in Australia.

We asked each winner to reveal what makes a broker stand out as the best in this market. You will find a full list of category winners and finalists at the end of the article – across CFDs, forex, share trading, options, warrants, margin lending as well as the top stock forum.

Listening to customers and constantly innovating continues to pay dividends for CommSec. It’s quite an achievement to win three categories. Richard Burns, CommSec’s general manager of customer experience, says he was “delighted to have been recognised again this year by TheBull’s readers”.

“Our customers’ input is a driving force behind many of the new features and products we develop, so it’s always fantastic when we earn their positive feedback,” Burns says. “This year, we’re continuing to deliver innovation to keep our clients at the forefront of online broking. We have a revamped research offering with an expanded range of tools and charts to give our customers the information they need in an easy-to-use site.”

Burns says thousands of investors are using CommSec Community to ask questions, get ideas and discuss their current trading interests.

There’s also a growing interest in mobile trading.

“In the past 12 months, the number of customers who have downloaded and used the CommSec app, as well as the number of trades placed via the app, have more than doubled,” he says. “We will soon be launching our CommSec CFD app for iOS7 and Android, and a redesigned trading app with new features that provide customers with more information at their fingertips. We’re also committed to continuing to provide our customers with market leading service, research, content and tools.”

Voters declared Westpac Online Investing as their favourite warrants brokers for 2014, as well as a finalist for Best Online Broker and Best Margin Lender (for BT). “The most important thing for warrants traders is to be able to track and monitor their positions so that they know how they’re going. Westpac Online Investing gives them that ability with competitive pricing, charting and alerts.”

Moglia says Westpac Online Investing is working on several additional features to further improve its platform for customers.

“In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out new features that will save traders and investors money through lower transaction costs,” Moglia says. “We are looking forward to making Westpac Online Investing even better for our customers during 2014.”

Winner: Best Stock Forum

Voters overwhelmingly declared HotCopper as the dominant stock forum. HotCopper received 90.48 per cent of the total vote. Aussie Stock Forums was second with 2.66 per cent of the vote and TopStocks came in third with 2.01 per cent.

A thrilled HotCopper managing director Greg D’Arcy said: “HotCopper is extremely grateful to all the investors who voted for us to again win this award.’ D’Arcy adds that HotCopper is ‘by far the biggest stock market discussion site, and their support is fantastic.”

HotCopper plans to return the favour to members for their support by providing an efficient and user-friendly way for them to share their views and benefit from each other’s knowledge and experience.

“We pride ourselves on protecting our members’ freedom of speech and on giving smaller investors the voice and influence that comes from enabling them to join together under a single umbrella,” D’Arcy says. “HotCopper is an extremely effective way of helping smaller investors to be heard by company directors and management, which all too often are deaf to their concerns.

“It’s extremely rewarding to be acknowledged for helping smaller investors in this way.”
