Tesla’s price target was trimmed to $420 from $520 while maintaining a Buy rating, highlighting a broader compression in mega-cap technology valuations even as Canaccord’s long-term thesis on the electric vehicle maker remains intact.

Tesla shares closed 1.81% lower at $355.28 following the analyst note, extending a period of volatility as markets digest shifting expectations for growth stocks. The new $420 target still implies approximately 18% upside from current levels, though it marks a significant reduction from the previous $520 forecast.

The pullback came despite Canaccord’s modest increase in first-quarter delivery estimates, suggesting markets focused more on the headline target reduction than the underlying operational outlook.

Tesla Outlook Remains Strong

Canaccord raised its Q1 delivery estimates to 370,000 units from 367,700 based on proprietary research, emphasizing that electric vehicle sales “still very much matter” to Tesla’s earnings profile. The firm’s regional assessment painted a mixed picture: China remains “sluggish,” while the United States and Europe are “improving but still meh,” according to the analyst note.

The target reduction stems primarily from valuation methodology rather than deteriorating fundamentals. Canaccord noted that the other “Magnificent 7” technology stocks have traded at more depressed multiples since its last Tesla update, prompting the firm to lower the multiple it applies to the company while keeping its 2028 earnings estimates unchanged. This approach suggests the analyst views the adjustment as a technical recalibration tied to broader market conditions rather than company-specific challenges.

The firm defended its revised valuation framework as “reasonable” given Tesla’s “long-duration, generational growth opportunities” spanning electric vehicles, robotics, autonomy, and energy storage. This framing positions Tesla as a multi-decade platform company rather than a traditional automotive manufacturer, a distinction that continues to drive debate among analysts and markets.

Price Targets

The Canaccord move comes reflects a broader pattern across Wall Street, with analysts continuing to remain bullish on Tesla’s stock, while cutting price targets at will. Multiple firms including Roth Capital, Morgan Stanley, and others have made similar moves over the past 12 months, cutting while preserving Buy or Overweight ratings.

Bulls point to unchanged long-term earnings models and the reaffirmed Buy rating as evidence that structural growth narratives around artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and energy storage remain credible. The fact that Canaccord raised rather than lowered its near-term delivery estimate provides additional support for this view.

Bears, however, see a pattern of incremental de-rating as reality catches up with previously optimistic growth projections. The explicit acknowledgment that EV sales drive current earnings underscores Tesla’s continued exposure to cyclical automotive demand, pricing pressure, and intensifying competition, particularly in China.

Bull Case:

  • Buy rating maintained despite large target cut signals intact long-term conviction
  • 2028 earnings estimates unchanged showing no fundamental deterioration in growth trajectory
  • Q1 delivery estimate raised to 370,000 units indicating resilient near-term demand
  • Generational growth opportunities in autonomy, robotics and energy storage remain undervalued
  • New $420 target still offers 18% upside from current $355 price level

Bear Case:

  • 19% price target reduction reflects pattern of repeated downward estimate revisions
  • China demand remains sluggish amid intense local competition and pricing pressure
  • Multiple compression tied to Magnificent 7 de-rating exposes further downside risk
  • EV sales still drive earnings while high-margin AI revenue largely unrealized
  • U.S. and Europe markets described as only improving but still meh
