US President Donald Trump has confirmed he will host a state dinner for Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the White House in September.

It is a rare invitation for world leaders.

Mr Trump and First Lady Melania have only held one other state dinner since arriving in the White House in 2017.

That was in April last year for the Washington DC visit of French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Trumps will host Mr Morrison and wife Jenny in Washington DC on September 20.

The last time a US president offered a state dinner invitation to an Australian prime minister was in 2006 when George Bush hosted John Howard.

“The President and First Lady will welcome Prime Minister and Mrs Morrison of Australia to the White House on September 20, 2019, for an official visit, which will include a state dinner,” the White House said in a statement on Monday.

“The visit will celebrate our two countries’ close friendship and shared history, and reaffirm our common vision for global peace, security, and prosperity.”
