The latest batch of COVID-19 hit earnings reports has forced shares to their worst session of August.

The S&P/ASX200 benchmark index closed lower by 41.0 points, or 0.67 per cent, at 6091.0 points on Thursday.

The All Ordinaries index ended down 33.1 points, or 0.53 per cent, at 6223.9.

The Australian dollar was buying 71.71 US cents at 1626 AEST, up from 71.28 US cents at Wednesday’s close.
