CSL shares (ASX:CSL) moved towards the top of the ASX 200 leaderboard today, adding 17.80% to hit $158.56 in what has been a mighty rebound off the lows, just over two months ago. With the CSL share price having made a low of A$90 in June, the current level represents a 76% bounce, yet one which leaves holders nursing losses of 41% over the past 12 months.
Today’s price action took place against the backdrop of fresh FY results, with a reset year now consigned to the history books. A glance at the 1 year chart below clearly identifies the share price stair stepping lower on four occasions into June’s low, with this latest bounce undoing the most recent step from May. Here’s a look at why sentiment is reversing.
Why Are CSL Shares Higher Today?
Let’s start with the important bits. The guidance pointed to a return to growth in FY27, with NPAT expected to rise by 5%, on flat revenue. The breakdown of revenue highlights why, with Vifor expected to decline, whilst CSL Behring should put up mid single digit growth, and CSL Seqirus low single digits. There is also a US$1.1bn share buyback that will provide something of a support for the stock.
The company delivered revenue of US$15.8bn on the year, for a 1% decline Y/Y, whilst the net loss of $2.6bn included impairments and one off costs.
What Caused The Earlier Sell-Off?
The backdrop to today’s move is months in the making. Back in May, CSL delivered one of the more brutal guidance resets in its recent history, cutting its FY26 revenue outlook to around US$15.2 billion and resetting net profit after tax and amortisation expectations to roughly US$3.1 billion.

The company flagged more than US$6.5 billion in total writedowns, tied largely to the troubled Vifor acquisition, alongside specific headwinds including US immunoglobulin destocking worth around US$300 million, weaker China albumin pricing of roughly US$200 million, and disruption from competitive and geopolitical pressures.
That May reset, as brutal as it was, lowered the bar to a point where any credible sign of stabilisation or progress could trigger a rebound. Today’s full-year result appears to have delivered exactly that. The move looks like a classic “less bad than feared” reaction, amplified by a market that had spent weeks repositioning around a deeply discounted valuation and a company-in-transformation narrative.
Vifor Hangover Versus the Rebuild Story
The Vifor acquisition remains the central tension in any CSL debate. The writedowns are large, the integration has been messy, and the “expensive mistake” framing has stuck. But today’s reaction suggests investors are beginning to price the Vifor chapter as largely behind them, with the focus shifting to what the underlying business looks like once the transformation program runs its course.
That shift in framing matters. CSL’s plasma franchise retains an oligopolistic market position, and structural demand for immunoglobulin remains intact despite the near-term destocking cycle. At the lows, the stock was trading at mid-2010s price levels despite a materially larger and more diversified business, which set up the valuation argument that has now started to play out.
What Lay Ahead
The technical picture reinforces the narrative of a sentiment regime shift in CSL shares rather than a quiet grind higher. Today’s close above A$158 puts the stock decisively above the upper Bollinger Band, with the band width at roughly 25%, consistent with a volatility expansion and range-breakout phase rather than a mean-reversion setup. That kind of move, where price breaks cleanly above a prior resistance zone with expanding bands, typically signals a squeeze dynamic where prior sellers are forced to reassess.
Trend strength readings are supportive. The ADX reading of 38.38, and rising, indicates a strong and strengthening trend, suggesting today’s move looks more like a confirmation leg of a trend transition than an exhaustion spike. Momentum is positive but not yet at extreme levels, which adds a degree of nuance to what might otherwise look like a blow-off session.
The reset that began this time last year has now been met with a result that, at minimum, confirms the company is on a credible recovery path. For a stock that spent months being treated as a value trap, that is a meaningful shift. There may well be further bumps in the road, yet for the time being at least, CSL bulls can enjoy the climb.
