Reece shares (ASX: REH) broke decisively above A$14 resistance today, climbing 8.57% to A$15.46 as markets reassessed company’s medium-term prospects despite near-term margin headwinds. But why are Reece shares up today?
The sharp move for Reece’s share price is the strongest single-session gain in months, propelling the stock out of a narrow channel that had capped gains below A$14 throughout much of the past two months. The breakout adds more than A$800 million to the company’s market cap on the day, and comes amid a broader rotation into quality industrial distributors as markets weigh cyclical pressures against structural growth opportunities. Trading volumes well above recent averages, with 1.27million shares, or 2.26x the ADV suggesting institutional participation rather than a purely retail-driven move.
Today’s move suggests renewed conviction that the worst of the company’s earnings compression may be behind it, with earlier housing market weakness across Australia, New Zealand, and the United States potentially easing following some strong home buyer numbers out of the US overnight.
US existing home sales hit their highest level since December, beating forecasts at 3.2% month over month vs the expected 0.7%. New starts also smashed through expectations, with the median price setting a new record to boot.

From a technical analysis perspective, today’s move above A$14 and the close at A$15.68 represents a clear breakout from the recent consolidation range. However, the sustainability of this move remains an open question. Reece shares initially spiked to similar levels following the February HY26 result before drifting back into the mid-teens and subsequently falling to the high-A$12s last month, and markets may want to see further signs of improvement in data from both key markets to settle higher.
The direction for Reece shares from here will swing on housing market reports coming out of Australia and the US, as we have seen today. Reece’s ability to stabilise and rebuild margins, the success of its US expansion strategy, and the broader macroeconomic environment, particularly interest rates and consumer confidence will also play a key role.
