Whitehaven Coal shares (ASX: WHC) topped the ASX 200 in the latest trading session, climbing 7.03% to A$8.98 as a powerful rally in global coking coal prices fed directly into one of Australia’s most coal-leveraged producers. The move extends the stock’s rise to 28.65% since the start of August, and brings a technical breakout above the psychological A$9.00 level into play.
The WHC share price touched a high of A$9.07 intraday before settling at A$8.98, with late-session profit-taking trimming some of the day’s gains. The move followed a decisive break above long-standing overhead resistance at A$8.50, and momentum indicators such as RSI and moving averages have signalled a strong trend, drawing trend-following funds into the stock.
Driving the recent rally at WHC
The primary catalyst is the sharp re-rating of coal markets. SGX Australian Premium Coking Coal futures have surged more than 30% in four weeks to above US$282 per tonne, while thermal coal prices have held firm around US$145 per tonne. The metallurgical coal price matters particularly for Whitehaven, which derives approximately 57% of its revenue from metallurgical coal following the acquisition and integration of BHP’s Queensland Daunia and Blackwater mines.
The commodity move lands on top of solid FY26 results. Whitehaven reported revenue of A$5.401 billion, statutory net profit after tax of A$385 million and underlying NPAT of A$227 million. Managed run-of-mine production reached 40.3 million tonnes, the top end of guidance, while unit cash costs fell 5% to A$132 per tonne. An April 2026 debt refinancing cut annual interest costs by A$50-55 million, and confirmed FY27 production guidance of 38.0-41.0 million tonnes offers near-term visibility.
Capital management has added further support, as Whitehaven declared a fully franked final dividend of 6.0 cents per share, taking FY26 dividends to 10.0 cents, and launched an on-market buyback of up to A$47.3 million running through 31 December 2026, executed via UBS Securities and confirmed through daily Appendix 3C filings.

Bell Potter, reviewing the FY26 results, trimmed its price target to A$7.50 on what it considered conservative forward guidance, suggesting the stock was fairly valued below current levels. That target sits well under the present A$8.98 share price, implying material downside if the commodity tailwind fades.
What Lay Ahead
The near-term trajectory rests largely on whether coking coal prices hold their gains. If prices remain above US$280 per tonne, earnings upgrades across analyst models are likely to follow, and a sustained break above the A$9.00-A$9.10 resistance zone could open further technical upside. On the other hand, coal remains deeply cyclical, and a slowdown or policy shift in major importers such as China and India could unwind both the commodity rally and the share price just as quickly.
For now, Whitehaven sits at the intersection of strong operational delivery and a hot commodity market; whether A$9.00 proves to be a ceiling or a new floor will depend on the durability of the coal rally and how management balances growth spending against shareholder returns.
