Unico Silver shares (ASX: USL) fell 12.43% on Thursday after pricing a A$60 million institutional placement at a 10.1% discount, pushing the stock below a key technical level, and extending losses on the week.

The USL share price closed at A$0.74 on Thursday, well below the placement price of A$0.76 per share, in s move that brings the weekly pullback to 17.78% heading into the final session. Despite the recent selling, the stock holds onto a 29.82% gain over the past 12 months, a reminder that the sell-off is being measured against a period of outperformance.

Critically, the session’s close of A$0.74 pushed USL beneath its 200-day Simple Moving Average, which sits at A$0.761, a level that technical traders widely monitor as a gauge of longer-term trend health. A breach of that threshold on elevated volume tends to attract additional selling pressure from momentum-oriented participants and automated stop-loss triggers, and Thursday’s price action fit that pattern closely, with 7.85 million shares changing hands, 1.91 times the average daily volume.

The Fundraise

The placement, which drew firm commitments from high-conviction domestic and offshore institutional precious metals funds, will lift Unico’s pro-forma cash balance to approximately A$110 million. Management confirmed that this war chest is sufficient to fully fund the company through to a Final Investment Decision on its flagship Joaquin Silver Project in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, removing what had been a lingering question mark over near-term financing requirements.

The capital will be deployed across several workstreams. A 20,000-metre drill campaign targeting resource growth and extensional drilling at both the Joaquin and Cerro Leon projects is already underway or planned. The company has also earmarked funding for a maiden Pre-Feasibility Study and an updated JORC Mineral Resource Estimate, both targeted for delivery in January 2027, followed by a Definitive Feasibility Study expected in late 2027. The raise also covers contingent acquisition payments owed to Pan American Silver and funds recent property acquisitions designed to expand Unico’s footprint across the broader Joaquin district.

Underpinning the investment case is a combined mineral resource base of approximately 330 million ounces of silver equivalent across Joaquin and Cerro Leon, a scale that positions Unico as one of the largest holders of undeveloped silver inventory listed on the ASX. The resource base has been a key driver of the stock’s 12-month outperformance and continues to attract institutional interest despite the short-term turbulence.

The dilution mechanics are straightforward. Pricing a placement at a 10.1% discount to recent trading levels is standard practice for a raise of this size, but it compresses the near-term upside for existing shareholders and creates a natural supply overhang as new institutional holders establish their positions. Markets will typically trade toward the placement price in the days following such a transaction, and Thursday’s action reflected exactly that.

Outlook and Analysis

The near-term technical picture for USL has deteriorated following the close below the 200-day SMA. Until the stock reclaims the level on sustained volume, the path of least resistance may remain sideways to lower, with the placement price of A$0.76 acting as a near-term ceiling rather than a floor. Support may emerge around the A$0.74 level where the stock closed, though a failure to hold that level could invite further selling.

From a fundamental standpoint, the picture is healthier, with the A$110 million cash position meaningfully reducing execution risk and insulates the company from the kind of mid-study capital raises that have derailed comparable development-stage explorers in the past. The institutional composition of the placement book, comprising precious metals-focused funds with a longer investment horizon, also suggests that the new paper is unlikely to be flipped aggressively in the near term.

The broader silver market context adds another layer of support to the medium-term thesis. Silver has benefited from a combination of industrial demand tailwinds, particularly from the solar energy and electronics sectors, and its dual role as a monetary metal during periods of macroeconomic uncertainty. A sustained silver price environment above US$30 per ounce would materially improve the economics of Joaquin as the company advances toward feasibility.

The key risks remain the project timeline and jurisdiction. With a DFS not expected until late 2027 and first production likely several years beyond that, markets must price in a long runway of pre-revenue expenditure. Argentina’s Santa Cruz Province, while home to several operating silver mines, carries a degree of political and regulatory uncertainty that offshore markets tend to discount relative to Tier-1 jurisdictions.
