TPG Telecom (ASX: TPG) shares experienced a significant decline today, triggered by the stock going ex-dividend and a subsequent market reaction to the company’s capital return strategy. The substantial drop reflects the market adjusting to the distribution of proceeds from the sale of its fibre assets.
Shares in TPG Telecom plummeted 32.14% today, reaching a new low of A$3.80. This sharp decline follows the stock trading ex-dividend, with the company returning approximately A$3 billion to shareholders. Year-to-date, TPG Telecom shares are down 15.37%.

The capital return stems from the net proceeds of approximately A$4.7 billion received from the sale of TPG’s fibre assets and Enterprise, Government, and Wholesale (EGW) business to Vocus. The capital management plan included a pro rata capital reduction and cash distribution of up to A$1.61 per share, comprising a A$1.52 per share capital reduction and a 9 cents per share unfranked special dividend.
TPG Telecom also allocated A$1.7 billion to repay bank borrowings. Shareholders overwhelmingly approved the capital return at an extraordinary general meeting earlier this month. Based on yesterday’s closing price of A$5.60, the capital return equated to an approximate 28.75% yield.
In October 2024, TPG Telecom agreed to sell its fibre and fixed network infrastructure assets to Vocus Group for A$5.25 billion. The transaction, completed in the second half of 2025, was a strategic move to streamline operations and focus on mobile and consumer fixed businesses. Proceeds were used to reduce net bank borrowings to around A$1.7 billion, strengthening the company’s financial position.
At an extraordinary general meeting, shareholders also approved an interim dividend of 9 cents per share. The company has outlined a policy to increase dividends over time, contingent upon sustainable profit and cash flow growth.
Analysts currently hold a consensus “Hold” rating on TPG Telecom’s stock, with a price target of A$5.00. This reflects a cautious outlook amidst the company’s ongoing financial restructuring and the market’s reaction to the capital return.
TPG Telecom’s share price decline reflects the market’s recalibration following the ex-dividend date and the significant capital return. While the company’s strategic asset sale and debt reduction efforts aim to enhance shareholder value and financial stability, the short-term market adjustments highlight the evolving financial landscape for TPG Telecom.
