Tabcorp shares (ASX:TAH) delivered the strongest performance on the ASX 200 on Wednesday, surging 23.53% to close at A$1.05 after the wagering and media company reported a 61.5% jump in half-year profit and raised its dividend by 50%, signalling a successful turnaround under new management.

Tabcorp shares led the benchmark index, closing at A$1.05 after touching an intraday high of A$1.10, the highest level in multiple years for the gambling operator. The 23.53% single-day gain added approximately A$650 million to the company’s market capitalisation, with trading volumes surging well above the daily average as markets responded enthusiastically to the earnings beat and improved profitability metrics.

The shares have now recovered significantly from the lows experienced during its corporate restructuring period, when the company divested its lotteries business to focus on wagering and media operations. Wednesday’s rally pushed Tabcorp’s year-to-date gains to 6.06%, making a red to green move on the day.

Financial Performance

Tabcorp reported financial results for the half-year ending 31 December 2025 that exceeded market expectations across key metrics. Group revenue increased modestly by 1% to A$1,344.9 million, while EBITDA before significant items climbed 14.3% to A$217.4 million. The standout figure was net profit after tax before significant items, which surged 61.5% to A$35.7 million.

The company’s Wagering & Media division, which represents the core of Tabcorp’s operations following the lotteries divestment, delivered EBITDA growth of 15.8% to A$181.4 million. This performance was driven by stronger customer engagement, improved product offerings, and successful integration of digital and retail channels.

Operating expenses decreased by 1.1% during the period, reflecting ongoing cost discipline and operational efficiencies that management has prioritised since the corporate restructure. The combination of modest revenue growth and tight cost control resulted in a 190 basis point improvement in EBITDA margin to 16.2%, demonstrating positive operating leverage—a key metric that markets had been watching closely.

Shareholder Returns and Balance Sheet Strength

The board declared an interim dividend of 1.5 cents per share (unfranked), representing a 50% increase from the prior corresponding period. While the dividend remains modest in absolute terms, the 50% increase signals management’s confidence in the sustainability of earnings and cash flow generation.

Tabcorp’s balance sheet position showed continued improvement, with net debt standing at A$631.2 million as at 31 December 2025 and a leverage ratio of 1.5 times EBITDA. The company successfully completed a A$300 million issue of five-and-a-half year Australian medium-term notes during the period, which improved funding diversity and extended average debt maturity to 5.4 years. Management characterised the balance sheet as healthy and positioned for growth opportunities.

Beyond the financial metrics, Tabcorp highlighted progress on several strategic initiatives designed to strengthen its competitive position in the Australian wagering market. The company launched new retail and in-play betting products during the half, aimed at enhancing customer experience and driving engagement across both digital and physical touchpoints.

The ongoing integration of Tabcorp’s digital, retail, and media assets represents a core pillar of the company’s strategy. By creating a more seamless omnichannel experience, management aims to capture a larger share of customer wagering activity and improve lifetime value metrics. The company’s retail network, including TAB outlets across Australia, continues to play an important role in the overall ecosystem despite the industry’s gradual shift toward digital channels.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Gillon McLachlan, who took the helm in 2023, emphasised the company’s commitment to execution in his statement accompanying the results.

“We will remain relentless in executing on our strategy in the second half and beyond,” McLachlan said, signalling that management views the first-half performance as a foundation for continued improvement rather than a peak.

Tabcorp operates in a highly competitive Australian wagering market, facing pressure from both domestic rivals and international online betting operators. The regulatory environment remains complex, with different state-based frameworks governing gambling activities. Recent industry trends have shown continued migration toward digital channels, though retail wagering through TAB outlets maintains a loyal customer base, particularly for horse racing.

The company’s ability to grow EBITDA by 14.3% while revenue increased just 1% suggests that market share dynamics may be stabilising, allowing management to focus on margin improvement and operational efficiency rather than aggressive top-line growth at any cost.

Outlook

Price Targets

While Tabcorp did not provide specific financial guidance for the full year, management’s commentary suggested confidence in maintaining momentum through the second half of fiscal 2026. The 50% dividend increase and positive commentary around strategic execution point to expectations for sustained profitability improvement.

Markets will be watching several key factors in coming months: the sustainability of margin expansion, the success of new product launches in driving customer engagement, and management’s ability to balance investment in digital capabilities with maintaining cost discipline. The company’s leverage ratio of 1.5 times provides headroom for potential strategic investments or acquisitions, should attractive opportunities emerge.

Bull Case:

  • EBITDA margin expanded 190 basis points demonstrating strong operational leverage
  • 61.5% profit growth significantly exceeded modest revenue increase expectations
  • Healthy balance sheet with 1.5x leverage enables strategic growth investments
  • 50% dividend increase signals management confidence in earnings sustainability
  • New product launches and digital integration driving customer engagement

Bear Case:

  • Revenue growth of just 1% highlights intense competitive pressure
  • Unfranked dividend reduces appeal for income-focused Australian investors
  • Continued industry shift to digital may pressure retail network
  • Single-day 24% gain creates risk of near-term profit-taking
  • Regulatory uncertainty in gambling sector remains ongoing headwind

Tabcorp’s first-half results demonstrate that management’s post-restructure strategy is gaining traction, with cost discipline and operational improvements translating into meaningful profit growth. However, the modest 1% revenue growth underscores the competitive challenges facing the business, and markets will need to see sustained top-line momentum to justify further valuation expansion.
