Stanmore Resources shares (ASX:SMR) surged, leading the ASX 200 on the day, driven by a continuation of positive momentum from late 2025 and strategic growth initiatives. The strong performance reflects market confidence in the company’s operational efficiency and expansion strategy.

The SMR share price rallied 12.18% today, closing at A$3.04, after hitting a new high of A$3.07 during the session. This jump extends the stock’s impressive run in 2026, bringing year-to-date gains to 29.36%, significantly outperforming the broader market.

The company’s recent success is underpinned by several key developments. In October 2025, Stanmore reported record quarterly run-of-mine (ROM) coal production of 5.3 million tonnes, up from 4.9 million tonnes in the previous quarter, alongside a 14% increase in saleable coal production to 3.6 million tonnes.

Furthermore, the company reduced its net debt from US$99 million to US$90 million while maintaining strong liquidity of US$420 million. “These results underscored operational efficiency and financial resilience,” according to a recent report.

Despite a 60% drop in full-year profit reported in February 2025 due to lower coal prices, Stanmore Resources announced a final dividend of 6.7 US cents per share, exceeding analyst expectations. The company’s guidance for 2025 was also viewed as modestly better than anticipated.

Ord Minnett maintained a ‘Buy’ recommendation for Stanmore Resources in December 2025, with an average one-year price target of A$2.72.

Bull Case:

  • Record coal production and sales volumes demonstrate operational strength.
  • Acquisition of Eagle Downs expands asset base and production capacity.
  • Inclusion in ASX 200 increases visibility to institutional investors.

Bear Case:

  • Profitability impacted by fluctuations in global coal prices.
  • Debt levels, although decreasing, remain a factor to monitor.
  • Market sentiment is vulnerable to changes in commodity demand.

Stanmore Resources’ strong start to 2026 reflects a combination of operational improvements and strategic acquisitions, despite headwinds from fluctuating coal prices. Markets will be watching closely to see if the company can sustain this momentum throughout the year.
