Sandfire Resources shares (ASX: SFR) hit a new all time high on Thursday at A$21.91, before closing out the session just below major resistance at A$21.47. With the price zone having capped earlier attempts higher in both January and June of this year, there are plenty of eyes on how the stock reacts in the coming days.

Sandfire Resources share price has added 76.42% over the past 12 months, reflecting the market’s appetite for clean, leveraged copper exposure at a time when the metal’s structural story remains compelling. Sandfire is the largest pure-play copper miner on the ASX, with producing assets at Motheo in Botswana and MATSA in Spain underpinning a cash-flow profile that responds sharply to copper price moves.

The copper story received a meaningful boost in June when Macquarie lifted its medium-term copper price assumptions by as much as 33% and named Sandfire as its preferred ASX copper play, raising its price target to $21 from $19.30. The broker cited steady, low-cost production and strong earnings leverage to higher copper prices. With the stock now trading just above that revised target, the Macquarie thesis has largely been absorbed into the price.

From a technical analysis perspective, Sandfire shares are trading above its 50-day moving average of $19.60, which itself sits above the 200-day moving average of $18.24, a classic alignment that confirms an established uptrend. A clean break and hold above $21.50 would represent a technical extension that could draw in fresh momentum buyers, while further failures could invite profit taking from those who have ridden the stock over recent months.

What happens from here largely hinges on whether copper prices and risk appetite can sustain the current level of enthusiasm. Markets appear to be concerned about the strength of the consumer following recent data, and if recession fears continue to grow, there may be few segments of the market that hold up well.
