Regis Resources (ASX: RRL) experienced a surge in its share price following an upgrade from Goldman Sachs, highlighting the complex factors influencing the gold miner’s market performance. However, this positive sentiment contrasts with downgrades from other firms, painting a mixed picture for the company’s near-term prospects.
The Australian gold miner’s shares closed up 7.03% today at A$6.09, buoyed by Goldman Sachs upgrading the stock to “Neutral” from “Sell” with a price target of A$6.50. This positive movement comes amidst a volatile period for the stock, which has seen a year-to-date increase of 138.82%.
Goldman Sachs’ rationale for the upgrade centers on the recent increase in gold prices and Regis Resources’ ability to generate unhedged free cash flow, which they believe more than compensates for the company’s higher operational costs. This assessment suggests confidence in Regis Resources’ ability to capitalize on favorable market conditions.

However, this optimistic view is not universally shared. Citi recently downgraded Regis Resources to “Sell,” setting a price target of A$3.80. The downgrade was driven by concerns over rising costs and a less optimistic production outlook. Citi highlighted that the company’s fiscal year 2025 production guidance of 350,000-380,000 ounces fell slightly short of expectations.
All-in sustaining costs (AISC) were projected at A$2,800 per ounce, approximately A$100 higher than consensus estimates. Growth capital expenditure at the Duketon operations was also a point of concern, projected at A$165-175 million, substantially higher than the consensus estimate of A$90 million.
Despite Citi’s bearish outlook, JPMorgan initiated coverage on Regis Resources with an “Overweight” rating and a price target of A$5.60. JPMorgan emphasized the company’s operations at the Duketon Gold Project and its 30% interest in the Tropicana Gold Mine. The firm also pointed to strong cash flow prospects, forecasting an average free cash flow yield of 15% over the next five years.
Recent strategic moves by Regis Resources include the establishment of a A$300 million revolving credit facility, shortly after repaying a syndicated loan facility of the same value. This move underscores the company’s focus on maintaining financial flexibility.
Analyst ratings from April show a range of perspectives. Morgans maintained an “Add” rating, raising the target price to A$4.65 from A$3.89, citing strong cash generation and debt repayment. Macquarie maintained an “Outperform” rating with a target price of A$4.30, noting production exceeding forecasts and a positive outlook for FY25 guidance. Conversely, Ord Minnett maintained a “Sell” rating, raising the target price to A$2.70 from A$2.40, expressing concerns over commodity price forecasts.
The divergence in analyst opinions reflects the inherent uncertainties in the gold mining sector, where factors such as gold prices, production costs, and operational efficiency can significantly impact a company’s financial performance. The market’s response to the Goldman Sachs upgrade indicates a degree of optimism surrounding Regis Resources’ ability to navigate these challenges. However, the concerns raised by Citi and Ord Minnett serve as a reminder of the potential headwinds facing the company.
