PLS Shares (ASX:PLS), formerly Pilbara Minerals, closed out the last week up 10.3%, with Friday’s 6.51% gain the third highest on the ASX 200 for the day. The move is hard to ignore, and for holders who have watched the stock grind through a difficult stretch since June, the question now is what comes next.

The PLS share price has pulled back 38.4% from June into the beginning of last week (now 32%), with the bounce returning holders to positive territory YTD, up 6.26%. It’s fair to say it has been bumpy ride for holders this year, yet that A$4 level has held through the worst of the pullbacks.

Last week’s rally appears to reflect a broader reset in lithium sentiment, with traders leaning back into Pilbara as a high-beta proxy for spodumene prices and an improving electric vehicle demand outlook. Battery metals optimism has been building across the sector, and Pilbara, given its near-pure exposure to spodumene, tends to capture that shift more aggressively than most peers. When the lithium trade turns risk-on, PLS is often the first name traders reach for, and recent price action fits that pattern well.

The fundamental backdrop has also improved in ways that give the sentiment trade something to anchor to. The company’s most recent quarterly update, released in late July, showed revenue growth, stronger shipment volumes, and a substantial cash balance. FY27 guidance pointed to higher production and lower unit costs at the midpoint versus the recent run rate, reinforcing the argument that Pilbara carries meaningful operating leverage into any recovery in lithium pricing. That combination of balance-sheet resilience and cost-curve improvement has kept the longer-term bull case alive even as near-term capex tied to growth projects has weighed on free cash flow.

What Next For PLS?

Looking to the analyst community for clues, the average price target sits at of A$5.15, roughly 11% up from here. Despite a difficult few months in the markets, a glance at the 1 year chart will leave little doubt about the longer term trend. With PLS shares trading 158% higher than this time last year, this is a name that has run up hot.

A glance back at the five year, and the A$4 zone had also acted as resistance and support back in 2023, potentially creating pockets of supply. The A$4.65-$4.75 level would be the next target on our list, although the macro backdrop is likely to take the lead.

Bull Case:

  • Lithium sentiment recovery could sustain momentum well beyond today’s session.
  • FY27 guidance shows higher output and lower costs, boosting operating leverage.
  • A$5.15 consensus target implies further upside from current price levels.

Bear Case:

  • Spodumene price relapse could quickly reverse today’s sentiment-driven gains.
  • Elevated growth capex constrains near-term free cash flow generation.
  • Valuation models suggest the stock remains expensive if lithium prices normalise lower.
