Perenti shares (ASX:PRN) have emerged as one of the ASX’s standout performers in May, with shares climbing 16.4% month-to-date after its Barminco subsidiary secured a major four-year underground mining contract worth approximately $850 million from Bellevue Gold.

The Perenti share price added 8.37% on Wednesday following the contract announcement, building on steady gains throughout May that have pushed the stock 16.4% higher since the start of the month. The rally represents a sharp reversal from the recent trend, with shares continuing to trade 22% lower since the start of the year, despite posting recent record earnings.

The Contract Boosting Sentiment

The Bellevue Gold contract, announced on 13 May, covers underground mining services at Bellevue’s flagship gold project in Western Australia over an initial 48-month term starting 1 August 2026, with an option for a 12-month extension. The scope encompasses underground development, production stoping, mining support services, and establishment of an operating fleet and related infrastructure.

Perenti expects to deploy approximately $75 million in growth capital expenditure during FY27 to fully establish the fleet and infrastructure required for the contract. While this represents a near-term cash flow consideration, the company frames the investment as directly supporting its medium-term earnings growth strategy.

The contract fits squarely within Perenti’s strategic focus on underground gold operations, which now represent roughly two-thirds of group revenue from underground contracts and more than 75% from gold-related work. The company reported record EBITA of $160 million in the first half of FY26 on revenue of $1.73 billion, with work in hand standing at $5.8 billion backed by an $18.6 billion pipeline.

Perenti CEO Mark Norwell characterised the award as reinforcing Barminco’s position as a global leader in underground mining.

“This contract award reinforces Barminco as a global leader in underground mining, further strengthening Barminco’s underground mining portfolio and earnings in Australia,”

The contract represents a significant win in a competitive tender process, with Perenti effectively stepping into a ramping, de-risked mine after Bellevue’s current contractor arrangement with Develop Global expires mid-2026. This timing reduces early-stage development risk for Perenti while providing access to a high-grade, long-life gold asset with competitive operating costs.

Bellevue Gold Project

The underlying economics of the Bellevue Gold Project provide important context for assessing the contract’s quality and durability. Bellevue has recently approved a $40 million paste plant to improve recovery rates, reduce seismic risk, and enhance underground mining conditions. The operation benefits from a power mix with very high renewable energy penetration, reducing diesel exposure and supporting lower operating costs.

Bellevue cleared its hedge book through December 2026, leaving the company with full leverage to spot gold prices and a simplified financial profile. Operational commentary and local reporting suggest strong production performance, which reduces counterparty risk for Perenti and supports confidence in long-term volume stability under the contract.

A well-capitalised, technically robust client with demonstrated operational success materially reduces the risk of contract renegotiations or volume cuts over the four-year term, factors that markets are incorporating into their valuation of Perenti’s forward earnings stream.

Risk in Transition

Despite the positive sentiment driving the current rally, material execution risks remain. Underground mining contracts face inherent geotechnical, labour availability, and cost inflation challenges, particularly during the ramp-up phase. Any schedule slippage, productivity underperformance, or labour cost spikes in Western Australia’s tight mining services market could compress margins and disappoint market expectations calibrated to the recent share price gains.

The company’s high exposure to gold and underground mining represents a double-edged strategic positioning. While this focus has driven margin expansion and earnings quality improvements, it concentrates cyclical risk. A sharp downturn in gold prices or operational issues at major client sites could trigger volume reductions or contract renegotiations, particularly on longer-term agreements.

Perenti’s first-half results demonstrated the company’s sensitivity to foreign exchange translation effects and the ongoing nature of its portfolio transition away from lower-margin work. The 14% share price decline on results day in February, despite record EBITA, illustrates that markets remain alert to guidance clarity, currency impacts, and the pace of portfolio reshaping.

The $75 million growth capital requirement for Bellevue, while supporting future earnings, will temper near-term free cash flow generation in FY27. If capital expenditure runs above guidance or if additional fleet investments are required across the portfolio, balance sheet flexibility could come under pressure, particularly given the company’s share buy-back commitments.

Bull Case:

  • $850 million contract adds four years of high-quality underground gold revenue visibility
  • Record EBITA margins validate strategic pivot to higher-margin underground portfolio focus
  • Strong contract pipeline and proven win rate support confidence in sustainable growth
  • Share buy-back program amplifies earnings per share leverage to margin improvements
  • Well-capitalised client with robust project economics reduces counterparty and volume risk

Bear Case:

  • $75 million FY27 growth capex requirement will pressure near-term free cash flow
  • Execution risks on complex underground contract could compress margins during ramp-up phase
  • High gold exposure concentrates cyclical risk if commodity prices weaken materially
  • Currency translation effects and portfolio transition create earnings volatility and guidance uncertainty
  • Tight Western Australian labour market threatens cost inflation on multiple contract sites
