New Hope shares (ASX:NHC) closed Tuesday’s session up 2.82% at A$5.84, capping a remarkable rally that has seen the thermal coal producer emerge as one of the ASX 200’s standout performers in 2026 despite a challenging backdrop for markets.
The New Hope Corp share price touched an intraday high of A$5.92, its strongest level in several years, extending gains that have now reached 19.18% over the past month and an impressive 44.2% year-to-date. The advance places NHC among the index’s leading outperformers, a striking turnaround for a company that endured multiple analyst downgrades and guidance cuts through the latter half of 2025.
Driving New Hope Shares Higher
The broader energy complex has provided a supportive backdrop for the rally. Fresh geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and elevated oil prices through early 2026 have redirected capital flows toward energy and resource names, particularly those offering high cash yields. New Hope’s dividend profile has become increasingly attractive in this environment, even as higher-for-longer interest rate expectations in Australia apply pressure to equity valuations across the board.
Markets also appear to be rewarding New Hope’s operational resilience and cash generation capacity even as the company navigates the aftermath of the coal price supercycle. The Queensland-based miner reported underlying EBITDA of approximately A$106.9 million for the January 2026 quarter, essentially flat compared to the prior quarter’s A$107.9 million. While the result showed no sequential growth, it demonstrated earnings stability at a time when many observers had expected further deterioration following the sharp pullback in thermal coal prices from their 2022-2023 peaks.
The company’s ability to maintain profitability comes despite an 84% year-on-year decline in profit reported earlier in 2026, a figure that reflects the normalisation from extraordinary windfall conditions rather than operational failure. New Hope’s half-year 2025 result, released in March last year, had shown saleable coal production up 33% to 5.4 million tonnes, with cash costs down 24% to around A$55.50 per tonne and underlying EBITDA climbing 22% to approximately A$517 million. Management accompanied those figures with a 12% dividend increase, signalling confidence in the sustainability of cash flows even as the pricing environment cooled.

The current rally represents a sharp reversal from mid-2025, when New Hope cut its full-year saleable coal sales guidance to 10.6-11.6 million tonnes from 10.8-11.9 million tonnes, triggering a 5-6% single-day decline. Later in the year, Macquarie downgraded the stock and slashed its target price, citing disappointing production outlook, which sent shares tumbling further. Those setbacks, however, appear to have reset market expectations to levels that subsequent operational performance has comfortably exceeded.
Broker Morgans subsequently upgraded New Hope, arguing the stock had been “unfairly sold off” after delivering an in-line result with strong dividend support. Morningstar maintained a fair value estimate around A$6.10 through much of 2025, assuming solid coal sales volumes and disciplined capital allocation. The willingness of institutional investors, including funds managed by Intelligent Investor, to maintain positions in New Hope suggests a cohort of the market views the company as a quality cyclical capable of generating attractive returns through the commodity cycle.
The company’s two core assets, the New Acland mine and its stake in the Bengalla operation, continue to underpin volume guidance for the coming years. Production stability at these operations has been critical in persuading markets that New Hope can navigate lower coal prices without the volume or cost shocks that plagued some peers during previous downturns.
Whilst volatility in the global energy sector, and ASX energy shares, is helping push NHC to highs, that same volatility swings both ways. Some caution is always advised, particularly in choppy markets.
