Mesoblast Limited (ASX:MSB) experienced a sharp decline in its share price, contrasting with recent positive sales figures and analyst upgrades. The stock’s performance highlights the volatile nature of the biotech sector, where market sentiment can shift rapidly.
Mesoblast shares closed down 7.17% today at A$2.85, making it the worst-performing stock on the ASX 200. This decline reverses some of the gains made last week, when the share price was boosted by strong Ryoncil sales. The A$2.95 level, previously seen as a resistance point, failed to provide support during the sell-off.
The downturn comes despite a recent surge in sales of Mesoblast’s lead product, Ryoncil. For the quarter ending December 31, 2025, Ryoncil generated US$35.1 million in gross revenue, a 60% increase compared to the previous quarter. Ryoncil is approved in the US for treating children under 12 with steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (SR-aGvHD). The company intends to initiate a pivotal trial to expand Ryoncil’s use to adult SR-aGvHD patients, a market estimated to be three times larger than the pediatric market.
Mesoblast has also strengthened its financial position, securing a US$125 million five-year interest-only facility with its largest shareholder. This new financing allowed the company to fully repay its prior senior secured loan and partially repay a subordinated royalty facility, which is expected to be fully repaid by mid-2026. The company noted the improved financial flexibility this provides, stating the new facility offers a lower overall cost, no early prepayment fees, and does not encumber any of Mesoblast’s material assets or intellectual property.

Following the strong Ryoncil sales figures, Jefferies upgraded Mesoblast’s stock rating from ‘Hold’ to ‘Buy’, raising the price target to A$3.30 from A$3.00. Analysts at the firm cited the alignment of Mesoblast’s quarterly results with their projections and the company’s impressive revenue growth over the past year as reasons for the upgrade.
Despite positive developments, the stock has shown vulnerability at the A$2.90 resistance level, with recent attempts to sustain prices above this threshold proving unsuccessful. This inability to break through resistance has contributed to selling pressure, leading to the recent decline.
Bull Case:
- Strong Ryoncil sales growth indicates market adoption.
- New financing improves financial flexibility.
- Analyst upgrade reflects increased confidence in growth.
Bear Case:
- Share price decline reveals market sensitivity.
- Stock faces resistance at A$2.90 level.
- Biotech sector inherently volatile and risky.
The market’s reaction suggests that while Mesoblast has made significant strides in revenue growth and financial stability, concerns remain about its ability to consistently maintain upward momentum. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the company can overcome resistance levels and capitalize on its recent successes.
