Mesoblast Limited shares (ASX:MSB) have retreated today after failing to break through a key resistance level, pausing a strong rally that has unfolded over the past several months. Today, Mesoblast shares closed down 4.53% at A$2.74, following repeated attempts to breach the A$2.90 resistance area, which the stock has been unable to sustain. Despite this recent pullback, Mesoblast has experienced a substantial rally of over 70% in the last four months although the share price remains 18% lower than its starting point at the beginning of 2025. But what has been behind the volatility?

Several factors have had a say in Mesoblast’s performance. On March 6, the company’s inclusion in the ASX 200 index initially triggered a sell-off, with shares falling over 5% despite a prior 600% surge over the preceding year. This suggests that markets may have already priced in the index inclusion, leading to profit-taking.

More recently, in September, the company entered into agreements for a potential US$50 million convertible note issuance, featuring a 5% annual coupon and a conversion price of US$16.25 per American Depositary Receipt (ADR), with the funding intended to repay existing debts and bolster working capital.

Following Mesoblast’s recent annual report, consensus forecasts predict revenues of US$69.2 million in 2026, a 303% increase year-over-year. The anticipated loss per share is expected to narrow by 54% to US$0.037, with the average price target remaining at AU$3.49.

Bull Case:

  • Strong revenue growth projected for 2026 (303% increase).
  • Analyst price targets have been revised upwards.
  • Director share acquisition indicates confidence.

Bear Case:

  • Recent failure to break key A$2.90 resistance level.
  • JPMorgan reduced its stake.
  • Remains below 2025 starting share price.

Mesoblast shares face a period of consolidation after a strong rally, with the stock now testing resistance levels. The company’s ability to execute its financial strategy and achieve revenue growth will be critical in determining its next move.
