Macmahon Holdings shares (ASX: MAH) smashed through the psychologically significant A$1.00 resistance level on Tuesday, closing at A$1.04 and capping a remarkable 233.87% gain over the past twelve months as a string of major contract awards transforms the mining services contractor into one of the ASX’s standout performers.

The 6.7% single-day jump in the Macmahon share price came on solid volume of 5.85 million shares, 51% above the stock’s average daily turnover, pushing the company’s market capitalisation to A$2.23 billion and signalling sustained interest in a business that has successfully pivoted from cyclical open-cut mining toward higher-margin underground and civil infrastructure work.

Resistance at A$1 had proved stubborn in recent months, with five earlier attempts having come unstuck, with the latest move a sign that bulls may be taking charge.

Driving Macmahon Shares To New Highs

The breakout marks a decisive technical victory for MAH bulls who have watched the stock consolidate below the dollar mark for weeks despite a backdrop of increasingly positive operational news. Behind the share price momentum lies a fundamental transformation of Macmahon’s earnings profile. The company delivered strong first-half FY26 results in February, reporting revenue growth of approximately 11% and meaningful improvements in return on average capital employed. Underlying operating cash flow surged to around A$190 million from A$163 million in the prior corresponding period, demonstrating the company’s ability to convert contract wins into actual cash generation, a critical metric for capital-intensive contractors.

More importantly, management disclosed a record order book and highlighted a filtered tender pipeline exceeding A$24 billion in civil and mining opportunities, with roughly half expected to be awarded within the next twelve months. That pipeline provides visibility into potential future work that could sustain the current growth trajectory well into FY27 and beyond.

The catalyst for Tuesday’s breakout appears to be the market’s delayed reaction to July’s announcement of a A$355 million underground mining services contract at the Mt Marion lithium operation. The multi-year agreement materially expands Macmahon’s underground footprint and adds substantial earnings visibility in a segment that typically commands higher margins than traditional open-cut work. Mt Marion is a significant lithium asset, and the contract win positions Macmahon to benefit from ongoing demand for battery materials despite recent volatility in lithium spot prices.

That award followed a May contract extension at the Majestic operation, further bolstering work-in-hand to approximately A$5.4 billion. Extensions at existing sites are particularly valuable because they leverage established site knowledge, client relationships, and deployed equipment, reducing ramp-up risk and capital intensity compared to greenfield projects.

Macmahon’s strategic pivot toward diversification has been a consistent theme in investor presentations throughout 2026. The company appeared at the Euroz Hartleys Rottnest Conference in March and delivered follow-up presentations in June, emphasising its transition from a predominantly open-cut miner into a diversified contractor with meaningful exposure to underground mining and civil infrastructure. Management has stressed disciplined tendering and risk management as core principles, seeking to avoid the margin compression that has plagued some competitors chasing revenue growth at any cost.

Looking ahead, the key variables for Macmahon will be its success rate in converting the A$24 billion tender pipeline into actual contracted work, its ability to maintain or improve margins as it executes the current record order book, and the broader health of mining and infrastructure capital expenditure in Australia and internationally. Commodity price trends, particularly in lithium and other battery materials, will influence client spending appetite and could either accelerate or slow the pipeline of new opportunities.

After a 54.48% YTD gain, and a 233% rally over the past 12 months, momentum may prove hard to shift.
