James Hardie Industries’ shares experienced a significant surge today following a robust second-quarter performance and upgraded financial guidance, potentially signaling a turning point after a challenging year.

The building materials company’s stock, trading on the ASX under the ticker JHX, closed at A$27.94, marking a 9.87% increase on the day. This upward movement occurred despite a broader market downturn, with the ASX 200 falling nearly 2%. However, even with today’s gains, JHX shares remain down -44.20% year-to-date.

James Hardie reported a 34% increase in net sales, reaching US$1,292.2 million, compared to the prior corresponding period. This growth was primarily driven by the inclusion of the AZEK business, acquired earlier this year, which offset a 1% decline in organic sales.

Adjusted EBITDA also saw a substantial rise, increasing by 25% to US$329.5 million. The company reported a net loss of US$55.8 million, impacted by AZEK acquisition-related expenses amounting to US$130.3 million, a lower gross margin, and higher SG&A expenses.

The gross margin decreased by 6.2 percentage points, largely due to a US$47.9 million inventory step-up adjustment related to recording the acquired inventory of AZEK at fair value. The legacy North America fibre cement business also experienced a lower gross margin during the period. Adjusted net income decreased 2% over the prior corresponding period to US$154 million.

The company’s CEO highlighted the positive performance of the Deck, Rail & Accessories segment and the better-than-expected integration of AZEK, citing surpassed cost synergy targets and early commercial wins as key achievements. The company has upgraded its guidance for FY 2026, boosting adjusted EBITDA targets, reflecting stable market conditions for Siding & Trim and continued growth in Deck, Rail & Accessories.

The markets will be watching closely to see if James Hardie can sustain this momentum. Today’s surge represents a welcome respite for shareholders, but the company still faces challenges in a dynamic economic landscape.
