IGO Ltd shares (ASX: IGO) surged through the psychologically significant A$10 barrier to start the week, closing at A$10.03 after making a new multi-year high intraday at A$10.05. The stock has been flying of late, with the latest close capping an impressive 43% recovery from April lows in just five weeks.

The breakout crowns a dramatic reversal in sentiment for the ASX-listed miner, which has delivered gains of 30.6% over the past month alone. Year-to-date, IGO shares have taken holders on a real rollercoaster, falling 15% YTD through late April before mounting an aggressive rally that has left bears scrambling and technical analysts marking fresh resistance levels above the A$10 threshold.

What Is Going On With IGO?

The catalyst for the initial April weakness came on 24 April when IGO released its March quarter (Q3 FY26) activities update. Despite headline figures showing group revenue up approximately 45% quarter-on-quarter and EBITDA reaching A$151 million, the market initially punished the stock with a 17.9% one day selloff that drove shares down to A$7.01.

The harsh reaction stemmed from disappointment in the lithium segment, where flat spodumene production at the Greenbushes operation and continued operational challenges at the Kwinana lithium hydroxide refinery, running at roughly 51% of nameplate capacity and posting an A$8 million EBITDA loss, overshadowed otherwise robust group performance.

Yet within that same quarterly report lay the seeds of the subsequent rally. IGO’s Nova nickel mine delivered a standout performance, with EBITDA climbing approximately 43% quarter-on-quarter to around A$60-61 million, while cash costs plummeted 24% to A$3.47 per pound and free cash flow generation reached A$52 million. More significantly, the Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia (TLEA) joint venture swung from near breakeven in the prior quarter to a profit contribution exceeding A$80 million, signaling that stabilising lithium prices were beginning to flow through to earnings.

As markets digested the quarterly details over subsequent weeks, the narrative shifted decisively from “lithium disappointment” to “leveraged energy-transition recovery play.” Analysts and fund managers began emphasising IGO’s dual exposure to both nickel and lithium at a time when battery metals fundamentals appeared to be turning a corner.

The combination of improving fundamentals and technical breakout could create a self-reinforcing feedback loop, with the stock up more than 100% over the past 12 months.

Market positioning now reflects firmly bullish sentiment, though caution flags remain. The rapid rerating means expectations are elevated, leaving the stock vulnerable to any disappointment in future quarterly updates or a reversal in battery metals pricing. Commodity trading price volatility represents the most significant threat to the sustainability of current earnings multiples.

The outlook for IGO hinges on continued operational excellence at Nova and a sustained recovery in lithium markets that allows the company’s downstream investments to reach their potential. With the stock now trading at multi-year highs and momentum firmly in bulls’ favour, there is plenty being priced into the stock. With the latest psychological hurdle overcome, bulls will want to see a hold on strength, and a firm breakout, or else the stock could be pulled back within range awaiting the next fundamental release.
